Alif. Lam. Ra'. These are the verses of the Book, and a Clear Qur'an.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Alif Laam Raa .. yeh aayat hain kitab e ilahi aur Quran e mubeen ki

Soon will the time come when the unbelievers will wish they were Muslims.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Baeed nahin ke ek waqt woh aa jaye jab wahi log jinhon ne aaj ( dawah e Islam ko qabool karne se) inkar kardiya hai pachta pachta kar kahenge ke kaash humne sar e tasleem kham kardiya hota

Leave them to eat and enjoy life and let false hopes amuse them. They will soon come to know.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Chodo inhein khayein (eat) , peeyain (drink) mazey karein aur behlawe mein daale rahey inko jhooti umeed. Anqareeb inehin maloom ho jayega

Whenever We destroyed a town, a definite term had previously been decreed for it.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Humne issey pehle jis basti ko bhi halaak kiya hai uske liye ek khaas mohlat e amal likhi jaa chuki thi

No people can outstrip the term for its destruction nor can it delay it.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

They say: "O you to whom the Admonition has been revealed, you are surely crazed.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Yeh log kehte hain “Aey woh shaks jis par zikr nazil hua hai, tu yaqeenan deewana hai

Why do you not bring down angels upon us if you are indeed truthful?"

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Agar tu saccha hai to hamare samne Farishton ko le kyun nahin aata?”

We do not send down the angels (in frivolity); and when We do send them down, We do so with Truth; then people are granted no respite.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Hum Farishton ko yunhi nahin utaar diya karte, woh jab utarte hain to haqq ke saath utarte hain, aur phir logon ko mohlat nahin di jati

As for the Admonition, indeed it is We Who have revealed it and it is indeed We Who are its guardians.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Raha yeh zikr, to isko humne nazil kiya hai aur hum khud iske nigehbaan hain

(O Muhammad), certainly We did send Messengers before you among the nations which have gone by.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

(Aey Muhammad), hum tumse pehle bahut si guzri hui qaumon mein Rasool bhej chuke hain

And whenever a Messenger came to them, they never failed to mock him.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Kabhi aisa nahin hua ke unke paas koi Rasool aaya ho aur unhone uska mazaak na udaya ho

Even so We make a way for it (that is, the Admonition) in the hearts of the culprits (like a hot rod);

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Mujrimeen ke dilon mein to hum is zikr ko isi tarah [salaakh ke manind(like a rod)] guzarte hain

they do not believe in it. This has been the wont of people of this kind from ancient times.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Woh ispar iman nahin laya karte. Qadeem (ancient times) se is qumash ke logon ka yahi tareeqa chala aa raha hai

If We were even to open for them a way to the heavens, and they could continually climb up to it in broad daylight,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Agar hum unpar aasman ka koi darwaza khol detay aur woh din dahade usmein chadhne bhi lagte

they would still have said: "Surely our eyes have been dazzled; rather, we have been enchanted."

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

tab bhi woh yahi kehte ke hamari aankhon ko dhoka ho raha hai, balke humpar jaadu kardiya gaya hai

We have indeed set constellations in the heavens and have beautified them for the beholders,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Yeh hamari kaar-farmayi hai ke aasman mein humne bahut se mazboot qiley (fortified spheres) banaye, unko dekhne walon ke liye muzayyan (adorn) kiya

and have protected them against every accursed satan

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur har shaytaan e mardood se unko mehfooz kardiya

save him who may eavesdrop, and then a bright flame pursues him.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Koi shaytaan in mein raah nahin paa sakta, illa yeh ke kuch sun-gun le le, aur jab woh sun-gun lene ki koshish karta hai to ek shola roshan uska peecha karta hai

As for the earth, We have stretched it out and have cast on it firm mountains, and have caused to grow in it everything well-measured.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Humne zameen ko phaylaya, us mein pahadh jamaye, usmein har naw ki nabataat theek theek napi tuli miqdar(measure) ke saath ugayi

And We have provided sustenance for you on it and also for those of whom you are not the providers.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur is mein maishat ke asbaab faraham kiye, tumhare liye bhi aur un bahut si makhlooqat ke liye bhi jinke raziq tum nahin ho

There is nothing except that its treasuries are with Us and We do not send it down except in a known measure.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Koi cheez aisi nahin jiske khazane hamare paas na hon, aur jis cheez ko bhi hum nazil karte hain ek muqarrar miqdar(measure) mein nazil karte hain

We send fertilizing winds, and then cause rain to descend from the sky, providing you abundant water to drink even though you could not have stored it up for yourselves.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Baar-awar hawaon (fertilizing winds) ko hum hi bhejte hain, phir aasman se pani barsate hain, aur us pani se tumhein sairaab karte hain, is daulat ke khazana-daar tum nahin ho

It is indeed We Who grant life and cause death and it is We who shall be the sole Inheritors of all.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Zindagi aur maut hum dete hain, aur hum hi sab ke waris honay waley hain

Surely We know those of you who have passed before and those who will come later.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Pehle jo log tum mein se ho guzre hain unko bhi humne dekh rakkha hai, aur baad ke aaney waley bhi hamari nigaah mein hain

Indeed your Lord will gather them all together. Surely He is All-Wise, All-Knowing.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Yaqeenan tumhara Rubb in sabko ikattha karega, woh hakeem(All-Wise) bhi hai aur aleem(All-Knowing) bhi

Surely We brought man into being out of dry ringing clay which was wrought from black mud,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Humne Insaan ko sadi (rotten) hui mitti ke sookhey gaarey (clay) se banaya

while We had brought the jinn into being before out of blazing fire.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur ussey pehle Jinno ko hum aag ki lapat se paida kar chuke thay

Recall when your Lord said to the angels: "I will indeed bring into being a human being out of dry ringing clay wrought from black mud.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Phir yaad karo us mauqe ko jab tumhare Rubb ne Farishton se kaha ke “ main sadi hui mitti ke sookhey gaarey se ek bashar paida kar raha hoon

When I have completed shaping him and have breathed into him of My Spirit, then fall you down before him in prostration."

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Jab main usey poora bana chukun aur us mein apni rooh se kuch phoonk doon to tum sab uske aagey sajde mein gir jana”

So, the angels - all of them - fell down in prostration,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Chunanchey tamaam Farishton ne sajda kiya

except Iblis; he refused to join those who prostrated.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Siwaye Iblees ke, ke usne sajda karne walon ka saath dene se inkar kardiya

The Lord inquired: "Iblis! What is the matter with you that you did not join those who prostrated?"

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Rubb ne pucha “ aey Iblis , tujhey kya hua ke tu nay sajda karne walon ka saath na diya?”

He said: "It does not behove of me to prostrate myself before a human being whom You have created out of dry ringing clay wrought from black mud."

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Usne kaha “mera yeh kaam nahin hai ke main is bashar ko sajda karoon jisey tu nay sadi hui mitti ke sookhey gaarey se paida kiya hai”

The Lord said: "Then get out of here; you are rejected,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Rubb ne farmaya “accha to nikal jaa yahan se kyunke tu mardood(accursed) hai

and there shall be a curse upon you till the Day of Recompense."

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur ab roz-e-jaza tak tujhpar lanat hai”

Iblis said: "My Lord! Grant me respite till the Day when they will be resurrected."

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Usne arz kiya “mere Rubb, yeh baat hai to phir mujhey us roz tak ke liye mohlat de jabke sab Insaan dobara uthaye jayenge”

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

Allah said: "For sure you are granted respite

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Farmaya “ accha, tujhey mohlat hai

until the day of a known time."

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Us din tak jiska waqt humein maloom hai”

Iblis said: "My Lord! In the manner You led me to error, I will make things on earth seem attractive to them and lead all of them to error,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Woh bola “mere Rubb, jaisa tu nay mujhey behkaya usi tarah ab main zameen mein inke liye dil farebiyan paida karke in sabko behka dunga

except those of Your servants whom You have singled out for Yourself."

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

Farmaya “yeh raasta hai jo seedha mujh tak pahunchta hai

Over My true servants you will be able to exercise no power, your power will be confined to the erring ones, those who choose to follow you.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Surely Hell is the promised place for all of them."

There are seven gates in it, and to each gate a portion of them has been allotted.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Yeh jahannum ( jiski waeed pairwan e Iblis ke liye ki gayi hai) uske saat (seven) darwaze hain, har darwaze keliye unmein se ek hissa makhsoos kardiya gaya hai

Aur unse kaha jayega ke dakhil ho jao inmein salamati ke saath bekhauf o khatar

And We shall purge their breasts of all traces of rancour; and they shall be seated on couches facing one another as brothers.

They shall face no fatigue in it, nor shall they ever be driven out of it.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

(O Prophet), declare to My servants that I am indeed Ever Forgiving, Most Merciful.
