And what is that indubitable event?

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Kya hai woh honi shudni (indubitable)

And what do you know what that indubitable event is?

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur tum kya jaano ke woh kya hai honi shudhni (indubitable)

The Thamud and the Ad denied the (possibility of a) sudden calamity, calling it false.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Samood aur Aad ne us achanak toot padne wali aafat ko jhutlaya

Then the Thamud were destroyed by an awesome upheaval;

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

To Samood ek sakht haadse mein halaaq kiye gaye

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

which He let loose upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession; so that (if you had been there) you might have seen people lying prostrate, as though they were uprooted trunks of hollowed palm trees.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Allah taala ne usko musalsal saat (seven) raat aur aath (eight) din unpar musallat rakkha (tum wahan hotey to) dekhte ke woh wahan is tarah pachade paday jaise woh khajoor ke boseeda (rotten) taney (trunks) hon

Do you now see any trace of them?

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Ab kya unmein se koi tumhein baki nazar aata hai

Pharaoh and those before him and the people of the overturned habitations all engaged in the same great sin.

They did not follow the Messenger of their Lord, and so He seized them with a severe grip.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Verily when the water rose to great heights, We bore you upon a floating vessel (i.e. the Ark)

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Jab pani ka toofan hadd se guzar gaya to humne tumko kashti mein sawar kardiya tha

so that We might make it an instructive event for you, and retentive ears might preserve its memory.

So when the Trumpet is blown with a single blast

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Phir jab ek dafa sur mein phoonk maar di jayegi

and the earth and the mountains are carried aloft and are crushed to bits at one stroke,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur zameen aur pahadon ko utha kar ek hi chot mein reza reza kardiya jayega

on that Day shall that indubitable event come to pass;

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Us roz woh honay wala waqiya pesh aa jayega

when the sky will be rent asunder, the grip holding it together having loosened on that Day,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Usdin Aasmaan phatega aur uski bandish dhili padh jayegi

and the angels will stand on the sides, with eight of them bearing aloft the Throne of your Lord on that Day.

That will be the Day when you shall be brought forth (before Allah) and no secret of yours shall remain hidden.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Woh din hoga jab tumlog pesh kiye jaogey, tumhara koi raaz bhi chupa na reh jayega

On that Day, he whose Record is given to him in his right hand will say: “Lo! Read my Record!

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Kaash meri wahi maut (jo duniya mei aayi thi) faisla-kun hoti

then cast him in the Fire,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Phir isey jahannum mein jhoonk do

then fasten him with a chain, seventy cubits long.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Phir isko satter(seventy) haath lambi zanjeer mei jakad do

He would not believe in Allah, the Most Great;

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Yeh na Allah buzurg-o-bartar par iman lata tha

nor would he urge the feeding of the poor.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Today he has been left here friendless;

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Lihaza aaj na yahan iska koi yaar-e-gamkhaar hai

and has no food except the filth from the washing of wounds,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur na zakhmon ke dhowan (washing of wounds) ke siwa iske liye koi khana

which only the sinners will eat.”

Jisey khatakaaron (sinners) ke siwa koi nahin khata

But no; I swear by what you see,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Pas nahin, main qasam khata hoon un cheezon ki bhi jo tum dekhte ho

and by what you do not see,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur unki bhi jinhein tum nahin dekhte

that this is the speech of an honourable Messenger,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Yeh ek Rasool-e-kareem ka qaul ( speech ) hai

not the speech of a poet. Little do you believe!

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Kisi shayar ka qaul nahin hai, tumlog kam hi iman latey ho

Nor is this the speech of a soothsayer. Little do you reflect!

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur na yeh kisi kaahin(soothsayer) ka qaul hai , tum log kam hi gaur karte ho

It has been revealed by the Lord of the Universe.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

And if he [i.e., the Prophets] had forged this Discourse and thereafter ascribed it to Us,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur agar is (Nabi) ne khud ghad kar koi baat hamari taraf mansook ki hoti

We would surely have seized him by the right hand,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

To hum iska dayan(right) haath padkad letay

and then severed his life vein;

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur iski rag-e-gardan (life vein) kaat daalte

and not one of you would have been able to withhold Us from doing so.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Surely it is a Good Counsel for the God-fearing.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Dar haqeeqat yeh parheizgar logon ke liye ek naseehat hai

We certainly know that some among you will give the lie to it,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur hum jante hain ke tum mein se kuch log jhutlane waley hain

and surely it will be a cause of regret for the unbelievers.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aise kafiron ke liye yaqeenan yeh mujeeb-e-hasrat (cause of regret) hai

Certainly it is a Truth of absolute certainty.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur yeh bilkul yaqeeni haqq hai

So glorify the name of your Lord Most Great.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Pas aey nabi, apne Rubb-e-azeem ke naam ki tasbeeh karo

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)
