(O Muhammad), thus do We recount to you the events of the past, and We have bestowed upon you from Ourself an admonition.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

(Aey Muhammad), is tarah hum pichle guzre huey haalaat ki khabrein tumko sunate hain, aur humne khaas apne haan se tumko ek “zikr” (dars e naseehat) ata kiya hai

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

He who turns away from it will surely bear a heavy burden on the Day of Resurrection,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Jo koi issey moah moadega woh qayamat ke din sakht baar e gunaah uthayega

the Day when the Trumpet shall be sounded and We shall muster the sinners, their eyes turned blue with terror.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Us din jabke soor (trumphet) phoonka jayega aur hum mujrimo ko is haal mein gher layenge ke unki aankhein (dehshat ke marey) pathrayi hui hongi

They shall whisper among themselves: "You stayed on the earth barely ten days."

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aapas mein chupke chupke kahenge ke duniya mein mushkil hi se tumne koi dus(ten) din guzare honge

We know well what they will say to one another: We also know that even the most cautious in his estimate will say: "You lived in the world no more than a day."

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Humein khoob maloom hai ke woh kya baatein kar rahey hongey, (hum yeh bhi jaante hain ke) us waqt unmein se jo zyada se zyada mohtaat andaza lagane wala hoga woh kahega ke nahin, tumhari duniya ki zindagi bas ek din ki zindagi thi

They ask you concerning the mountains: "Where will they go?" Say: "My Lord will scatter them like dust,

On that Day people shall follow straight on to the call of the summoner, no one daring to show any haughtiness. Their voices shall be hushed before the Most Compassionate Lord, so that you will hear nothing but a whispering murmur.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Us roz sab log munadi (summoner /pukarne waley) ki pukar par seedhey chaley aayenge, koi zara akad na dikha sakega aur aawazein rehman ke aagey dub jayengi , ek sar-sarahat ke siwa tum kuch na sunoge

On that Day intercession shall not avail save of him whom the Most Compassionate Lord permits, and whose word of intercession is pleasing to Him.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Us roz shafaat (intercession) kaargar na hogi, illa yeh ke kisi ko rehman iski ijazat de aur uski baat sunna pasand karey

He knows all that is ahead of them and all that is behind them, while the others do not know.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Woh logon ka agla pichla sub haal jaanta hai aur dusron ko iska poora ilm nahin hai

All faces shall be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting Lord, and he who bears the burden of iniquity will have failed;

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Logon ke sar us hayyul qayyum (zinda aur qayam) ke aagey jhuk jayenge. Na-murad hoga jo us waqt kisi zulm ka baar (bojh)-e-gunaah uthaye huey ho

but whosoever does righteous works, being a believer, shall have no fear of suffering wrong or loss."

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur kisi zulm ya haqq talafi ka khatra na hoga us shaks ko jo neik amal karey aur iske saath woh momin bhi ho

(O Muhammad), thus have We revealed this as an Arabic Qur'an and have expounded in it warning in diverse ways so that they may avoid evil or become heedful.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur (aey Muhammad) isi tarah humne isey Quran e arabi bana kar nazil kiya hai aur ismein tarah tarah se tambihaat (warnings) ki hain shayad ke yeh log kajhrawi (perverseness) se bachein ya in mein kuch hosh ke aasaar is ki badaulat paida hon

Exalted is Allah, the True King! Hasten not with reciting the Qur'an before its revelation to you is finished, and pray: "Lord! Increase me in knowledge."

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Pas baala o bartar hai Allah, baadshah e haqiqi. Aur dekho, Quran padhne mein jaldi na kiya karo jabtak ke tumhari taraf uski wahee takmeel ko na pahunch jaye, aur dua karo ke aey parwardigar mujhey mazeed ilm ata kar

Most certainly We had given Adam a command before, but he forgot. We found him lacking in firmness of resolution.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Humne issey pehle Adam ko ek hukum diya tha, magar woh bhool gaya aur humne us mein azm (determination/firm resolve) na paya

Recall when We said to the angels: "Prostrate yourselves before Adam"; all prostrated themselves save Iblis. He refused.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Yaad karo woh waqt jabke humne Farishton se kaha tha ke Adam ko sajda karo, woh sab to sajda kar gaye, magar ek iblis tha ke inkar kar baitha

Then We said: "Adam! He is an enemy to you and to your wife. So let him not drive both of you out of Paradise and plunge you into affliction,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Ispar humne Adam se kaha ke “dekho, yeh tumhara aur tumhari biwi ka dushman hai, aisa na ho ke yeh tumhein jannat se nikalwa de aur tum museebat mein padh jao

(for in Paradise) neither are you hungry nor naked,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Yahan to tumhein yeh aasaishein (facilities) hasil hain ke na bhuke nange rehte ho

nor face thirst or scorching heat."

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Na pyas aur dhoop tumhein satati hai”

But Satan seduced him, saying: "Adam! Shall I direct you to a tree of eternal life and an abiding kingdom?"

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Lekin shaytan ne usko phuslaya, kehne laga “Adam, bataun tumhein woh darakht jissey abadi zindagi aur la-zawal (everlasting) sultanat hasil hoti hai?”

Then the two of them ate the fruit of that tree and their shameful parts became revealed to each other, and they began to cover themselves with the leaves from the Garden. Thus Adam disobeyed his Lord and strayed into error.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aakhir e kaar woh dono (miyan biwi) us darakht ka phal kha gaye, natija ye hua ke fawran hi unke satr (nakedness) ek dusre ke aagey khul gaye aur lagey dono apne aap ko jannat ke patton se dhankne.

Thereafter his Lord exalted him, accepted his repentance, and bestowed guidance upon him,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Phir uske Rubb ne usey barguzida kiya aur uski tawba qabool karli aur usey hidayat bakshi

and said: "Get down, both of you, (that is, man and Satan), and be out of it; each of you shall be an enemy to the other. Henceforth if there comes to you a guidance from Me, then whosoever follows My guidance shall neither go astray nor suffer misery.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

But whosoever turns away from this Admonition from Me shall have a straitened life; We shall raise him blind on the Day of Resurrection,"

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur jo mere “zikr” (dars e naseehat) se mooh moadega uske liye duniya mein tangg zindagi hogi aur qayamat ke roz hum usey andha utayenge”

where-upon he will say: "Lord! Why have You raised me blind when I had sight in the world?"

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Woh kahega “parwardigar, duniya mein to main ankhon wala tha, yahan mujhey andha kyun uthaya?”

He will say: "Even so it is. Our Signs came to you and you ignored them. So shall you be ignored this Day."

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Allah taala farmayega “haan, isi tarah tu hamari aayat ko, jabke woh tere paas aayi thi, tu nay bhula diya tha usi tarah aaj tu bhulaya jaa raha hai”

Thus do We requite him who transgresses and does not believe in the signs of your Lord (during the life of the world); and surely the punishment of the Hereafter is even more terrible and more enduring.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Is tarah hum hadd se guzarne waley aur apne Rubb ki aayat na maanne waley ko (duniya mein ) badla dete hain aur aakhirat ka azaab zyada sakht aur zyada dair pa hai (more lasting)

Did they not find any guidance in the fact that We destroyed many nations in whose ruined dwelling-places they now walk about? Surely there are many Signs in them for people endowed with wisdom.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Phir kya in logon ko (tareekh ke is sabaq se) koi hidayat na mili ke insey pehle kitni hi qaumon ko hum halaak kar chuke hain jinki (barbaad shuda) bastiyon mein aaj yeh chalte phirte hain?

Were it not for a word already gone from your Lord, the decree (of their destruction) would have come to pass.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

So bear patiently with what they say. Glorify your Lord, praising Him before sunrise and before sunset, and in the watches of the night, and glorify Him and at the ends of the day that you may attain to happiness.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Pas (aey Muhammad), jo baatein yeh log banate hain unpar sabr karo, aur apne Rubb ki hamd o sana ke saath uski tasbeeh karo Suraj nikalne se pehle aur guroob honay se pehle, aur raat ke auqat mein bhi tasbeeh karo aur din ke kinaron par bhi, shayad ke tum raazi ho jao

Do not turn your eyes covetously towards the embellishments of worldly life that We have bestowed upon various kinds of people to test them. But the clean provision bestowed upon you by your Lord is better and more enduring.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur nigah utha kar bhi na dekho duniyavi zindagi ki us shaan o shaukat ko jo humne in mein se mukhtalif kism ke logon ko de rakkhi hai, woh to humne unhein aazmaish mein daalne ke liye di hai, aur tere Rubb ka diya hua rizq e halal hi behtar aur paaindatar (more lasting) hai

Enjoin Prayer on your household, and do keep observing it. We do not ask you for any worldly provision; rather, it is We Who provide you, and ultimately the pious will end up the best.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Apne ehal o ayal (member of your family) ko namaz ki talkeen karo aur khud bhi iske paband raho, hum tumse koi rizq nahin chahte, rizq to hum hi tumhein de rahey hain aur anjaam ki bhalayi taqwa hi ke liye hai

They ask: "Why does he not bring us a (miraculous) sign from his Lord?" Has there not come to them a Book containing the teachings of the previous scriptures?

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Woh kehte hain ke yeh shaks apne Rubb ki taraf se koi nishani (mojaza) kyun nahin laata? Aur kya inke paas agle saheefon ki tamaam taleemat ka bayan e wazeh nahin aa gaya

Had We destroyed them through some calamity before his coming, they would have said: "Our Lord! Why did You not send any Messenger to us that we might have followed Your signs before being humbled and disgraced?"

Agar hum uske aane se pehle inko kisi azaab se halaak kardete to phir yahi log kehte ke aey hamare parwardigar, tu nay hamare paas koi Rasool kyun na bheja ke zaleel o ruswa honay se pehle hi hum teri aayat ki pairwi ikhtiyar kar letay

Tell them, (O Muhammad): "Everyone is waiting for his end. Wait, then, and you will soon know who are the people of the Right Way, and are rightly-guided."

(Aey Muhammad) insey kaho, har ek anjaam e kaar ke intezar mein hai, pas ab muntazir raho, anqareeb tumhein maloom ho jayega ke kaun seedhi raah chalne waley hain aur kaun hidayat-yafta (rightly guided) hain

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)
