Surah 56

056 surah

اِذَا وَقَعَتِ الۡوَاقِعَةُ ۙ‏ ١

When the Event will come to pass

Jab woh honay wala waqia pesh aa jayega

لَيۡسَ لِـوَقۡعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ​ ۘ‏ ٢

– and then there will be no one to deny its occurrence –

To koi uske waquh(occurrence) ko jhutlane wala na hoga

خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ ۙ‏ ٣

(a calamitous Event) that shall turn things upside down:

Woh tah-o-bala (pasth aur buland) kardene wali aafat hogi

اِذَا رُجَّتِ الۡاَرۡضُ رَجًّا ۙ‏ ٤

when the earth will suddenly shake with a terrible shaking,

Zameen us waqt ek baar hi hila daali jayegi

وَّبُسَّتِ الۡجِبَالُ بَسًّا ۙ‏ ٥

and the mountains will crumble

Aur pahad is tarah reza reza kardiye jayenge

فَكَانَتۡ هَبَآءً مُّنۡۢبَـثًّا ۙ‏ ٦

and will scatter abroad into fine dust.

Ke paraganda (scattered) gubar (dust) ban kar reh jayenge

وَّكُنۡـتُمۡ اَزۡوَاجًا ثَلٰـثَـةً ؕ‏ ٧

You shall then become three groups.

Tum log us waqt teen girohon (jamaat) mein taqseem ho jaogey

فَاَصۡحٰبُ الۡمَيۡمَنَةِ ۙ مَاۤ اَصۡحٰبُ الۡمَيۡمَنَةِ ؕ‏ ٨

The People on the Right: and how fortunate will be the People on the Right!

Dayein bazu waley, so dayein bazu walon (ke khush-naseebi ) ka kya kehna

وَاَصۡحٰبُ الۡمَشۡـَٔـمَةِ ۙ مَاۤ اَصۡحٰبُ الۡمَشۡـَٔـمَةِؕ‏ ٩

And the People on the Left: and how miserable will be the People on the Left!

Aur bayein bazu waley, to bayein bazu walon (ki badnasibi ka) kya thikana

وَالسّٰبِقُوۡنَ السّٰبِقُوۡنَۚ  ۙ‏ ١٠

As for the Foremost, they will be the foremost!

Aur aagey waley to phir aagey waley hi hain

اُولٰٓٮِٕكَ الۡمُقَرَّبُوۡنَ​ۚ‏ ١١

They shall be near-stationed (to their Lord),

Wahi to muqarrab (nearest to Allah) log hain

فِىۡ جَنّٰتِ النَّعِيۡمِ‏ ١٢

in the Gardens of Bliss.

Niyamat bhari jannaton mein rahengey

ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَۙ‏ ١٣

A throng of the ancients,

Aglon mein se bahut hongey

وَقَلِيۡلٌ مِّنَ الۡاٰخِرِيۡنَؕ‏ ١٤

and a few from later times.

Aur pichlon mein se kam

عَلٰى سُرُرٍ مَّوۡضُوۡنَةٍۙ‏ ١٥

They (will be seated) on gold-encrusted couches,

Murassasa takhaton par (On thrones decorated)

مُّتَّكِـــِٕيۡنَ عَلَيۡهَا مُتَقٰبِلِيۡنَ‏ ١٦

reclining on them, arrayed face to face;

Takiye lagaye aamne saamne baithengey

يَطُوۡفُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وِلۡدَانٌ مُّخَلَّدُوۡنَۙ‏ ١٧

immortal youths shall go about them

Unki majlison mein abadi ladke sharab-e-chashma-e jaari se

بِاَكۡوَابٍ وَّاَبَارِيۡقَ ۙ وَكَاۡسٍ مِّنۡ مَّعِيۡنٍۙ‏ ١٨

with goblets and ewers and a cup filled with a drink drawn from a running spring,

Labrez pyale aur kantar (jugs) aur saagar liye daudte phirte hongey

لَّا يُصَدَّعُوۡنَ عَنۡهَا وَلَا يُنۡزِفُوۡنَۙ‏ ١٩

a drink by which their minds will not be clouded nor will it cause drunkenness;

Jisey pee kar na unka sar chakrayega na unki aqal mein fatur (drunkenness) aayega

وَفَاكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُوۡنَۙ‏ ٢٠

they will also go about them with the fruits of which they may choose,

Aur woh unke saamne tarah tarah ke lazeez phal (fruits) pesh karengey jisey chahe chun le

وَلَحۡمِ طَيۡرٍ مِّمَّا يَشۡتَهُوۡنَؕ‏ ٢١

and with the flesh of any fowl that they may desire to eat;

Aur parindon ke gosht pesh karenge ke jis parinde ka chahein istimal karein

وَحُوۡرٌ عِيۡنٌۙ‏ ٢٢

and there shall be wide-eyed maidens,

Aur unke liye khubsurat aankhon wali hoorein hongi

كَاَمۡثَالِ اللُّـؤۡلُـوٴِالۡمَكۡنُوۡنِ​ۚ‏ ٢٣

beautiful as pearls hidden in their shells.

Aisi haseen jaise chupa kar rakkhey huey moti

جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوۡا يَعۡمَلُوۡنَ‏ ٢٤

All this shall be theirs as a reward for their deeds.

Yeh sab kuch un aamal ki jaza ke taur par unhein milega jo woh duniya mein karte rahe thay

لَا يَسۡمَعُوۡنَ فِيۡهَا لَغۡوًا وَّلَا تَاۡثِيۡمًا ۙ‏ ٢٥

There they shall hear no idle talk nor any sinful speech.

Wahan woh koi behuda kalaam ya gunah ki baat na sunengey

اِلَّا قِيۡلًا سَلٰمًا سَلٰمًا‏ ٢٦

All talk will be sound and upright.

Jo baat bhi hogi theek theek hogi

وَاَصۡحٰبُ الۡيَمِيۡنِ ۙ مَاۤ اَصۡحٰبُ الۡيَمِيۡنِؕ‏ ٢٧

As for the People on the Right, how fortunate shall be the people on the Right!

Aur daayein bazu waley, daayein bazu walon ki khush nasibi ka kya kehna

فِىۡ سِدۡرٍ مَّخۡضُوۡدٍۙ‏ ٢٨

They shall be in the midst of thornless lote trees,

Woh be-khaar (thornless) beriyon(lote trees)

وَّطَلۡحٍ مَّنۡضُوۡدٍۙ‏ ٢٩

and flower-clad acacias,

Aur teh bar teh chadey huey kelon (bananas)

وَّظِلٍّ مَّمۡدُوۡدٍۙ‏ ٣٠

and extended shade,

Aur door tak phayli hui chaaon (shadow)

وَّ مَآءٍ مَّسۡكُوۡبٍۙ‏ ٣١

and gushing water,

Aur har dum rawan (gushing) paani

وَّفَاكِهَةٍ كَثِيۡرَةٍۙ‏ ٣٢

and abundant fruit,

Aur kabhi khatam na honay waley

لَّا مَقۡطُوۡعَةٍ وَّلَا مَمۡنُوۡعَةٍۙ‏ ٣٣

never-ending and unforbidden.

Aur bay rok-tok milne waley ba-kasrat phalon (fruits)

وَّ فُرُشٍ مَّرۡفُوۡعَةٍؕ‏ ٣٤

They shall be on upraised couches,

Aur unchi nishist gaahon (exalted thrones) mein hongay

اِنَّاۤ اَنۡشَاۡنٰهُنَّ اِنۡشَآءًۙ‏ ٣٥

and their spouses We shall have brought them into being afresh,

Unki biwiyon ko hum khaas taur par naye sirey se paida karengey

فَجَعَلۡنٰهُنَّ اَبۡكَارًاۙ‏ ٣٦

and shall have made them virgins,

Aur unhein bakira (virgins) bana dengey

عُرُبًا اَتۡرَابًاۙ‏ ٣٧

intensely loving and of matching age.

Apne shoharon ki aashik aur umar mein humsin (equal age)

لِّاَصۡحٰبِ الۡيَمِيۡنِؕ‏ ٣٨

All this will be for the People on the Right;

Yeh kuch daayein bazu walon ke liye hai

ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَۙ‏ ٣٩

a large throng from the ancients,

Woh aglon mein se bahut hongey

وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الۡاٰخِرِيۡنَؕ‏ ٤٠

and also a large throng from those of later times.

Aur pichlon mein se bhi bahut

وَاَصۡحٰبُ الشِّمَالِ ۙ مَاۤ اَصۡحٰبُ الشِّمَالِؕ‏ ٤١

As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left!

Aur baayein (left) bazu wale, bayein bazu walon ki badnasibi ka kya puchna

فِىۡ سَمُوۡمٍ وَّحَمِيۡمٍۙ‏ ٤٢

They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water,

Woh luu ki lapat (midst of scorching wind) aur khaulte (boiling) huey paani

وَّظِلٍّ مِّنۡ يَّحۡمُوۡمٍۙ‏ ٤٣

and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke,

Aur kaalay dhuwon (smoke) ke saaye mein hongey

لَّا بَارِدٍ وَّلَا كَرِيۡمٍ‏ ٤٤

which will neither be cool nor soothing.

Jo na thanda hoga na aaram de

اِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوۡا قَبۡلَ ذٰ لِكَ مُتۡرَفِيۡنَۚ  ۖ‏ ٤٥

Surely they had lived before in luxury,

Yeh woh log hongey jo is anjaam ko pahunchne se pehle khush haal thay

وَكَانُوۡا يُصِرُّوۡنَ عَلَى الۡحِنۡثِ الۡعَظِيۡمِ​ۚ‏ ٤٦

and had persisted in the Great Sin.

Aur gunaah-e-azeem par israr karte thay

وَكَانُوۡا يَقُوۡلُوۡنَ ۙ اَٮِٕذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَّعِظَامًا ءَاِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوۡثُوۡنَۙ‏ ٤٧

They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead?

Kehte thay “kya jab hum mar kar khaak ho jayengey aur haddiyon ka panjar reh jayengey to phir utha khadey kiye jayenge

اَوَاٰبَآؤُنَا الۡاَوَّلُوۡنَ‏ ٤٨

(We) and our fore-fathers of yore?”

Aur kya hamare woh baap dada bhi uthaye jayengey jo pehle guzar chuke hain?”

قُلۡ اِنَّ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَ وَالۡاٰخِرِيۡنَۙ‏ ٤٩

Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones

Aye Nabi in logon se kaho, yaqeenan agle aur pichle sab

لَمَجۡمُوۡعُوۡنَ ۙ اِلٰى مِيۡقَاتِ يَوۡمٍ مَّعۡلُوۡمٍ‏ ٥٠

shall all be brought together on an appointed Day.

Ek din zaroor jama kiye janey wale hain jiska waqt muqarrar kiya ja chuka hai

ثُمَّ اِنَّكُمۡ اَيُّهَا الضَّآلُّوۡنَ الۡمُكَذِّبُوۡنَۙ‏ ٥١

Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth,

Phir aey gumrahon aur jhutlane walon

لَاٰكِلُوۡنَ مِنۡ شَجَرٍ مِّنۡ زَقُّوۡمٍۙ‏ ٥٢

shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum,

Tum shajar-e-zaqqum ki giza khane waley ho

فَمٰلِــُٔوۡنَ مِنۡهَا الۡبُطُوۡنَ​ۚ‏ ٥٣

filling your bellies with it;

Usi se tum pait bharogey

فَشٰرِبُوۡنَ عَلَيۡهِ مِنَ الۡحَمِيۡمِ​ۚ‏ ٥٤

and thereupon you shall drink boiling water,

Aur upar se khaulta (boiling) hua paani

فَشٰرِبُوۡنَ شُرۡبَ الۡهِيۡمِؕ‏ ٥٥

drinking it as thirsty camels do.”

Toans (thirst) lagey huey ount (camel) ki tarah piogey

هٰذَا نُزُلُهُمۡ يَوۡمَ الدِّيۡنِؕ‏ ٥٦

Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense.

Yahi baayein walon ki ziyafat ka saamaan roz-e-jaza mein

نَحۡنُ خَلَقۡنٰكُمۡ فَلَوۡلَا تُصَدِّقُوۡنَ‏ ٥٧

We have created you, then why would you not confirm it?

Humne tumhein paida kiya hai phir kyun tasdeek (confirm) nahin karte

اَفَرَءَيۡتُمۡ مَّا تُمۡنُوۡنَؕ‏ ٥٨

Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit?

Kabhi tumne gaur kiya, yeh nutfa (sperm) jo tum daltey ho

ءَاَنۡتُمۡ تَخۡلُقُوۡنَهٗۤ اَمۡ نَحۡنُ الۡخٰلِقُوۡنَ‏ ٥٩

Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators?

Usse baccha tum banate ho ya uske banane wale hum hain

نَحۡنُ قَدَّرۡنَا بَيۡنَكُمُ الۡمَوۡتَ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوۡقِيۡنَۙ‏ ٦٠

It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated.

Humne tumharey darmiyan maut ko takseem kiya hai, aur hum issey aajiz nahin hai

عَلٰٓى اَنۡ نُّبَدِّلَ اَمۡثَالَـكُمۡ وَنُـنۡشِئَكُمۡ فِىۡ مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ‏  ٦١

Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about.

Ke tumhari shaklein badal dein aur kisi aisi shakal mein tumhein paida kardein jisko tum nahin jante

وَلَـقَدۡ عَلِمۡتُمُ النَّشۡاَةَ الۡاُوۡلٰى فَلَوۡلَا تَذَكَّرُوۡنَ‏ ٦٢

You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it?

Apni pehli paidaish ko to tum jante ho, phir kyun sabaq nahin letay

اَفَرَءَيۡتُمۡ مَّا تَحۡرُثُوۡنَؕ‏ ٦٣

Have you considered the seeds you till?

Kabhi tumne socha, yeh beej (seed) jo tum botey ho

ءَاَنۡتُمۡ تَزۡرَعُوۡنَهٗۤ اَمۡ نَحۡنُ الزّٰرِعُوۡنَ‏ ٦٤

Is it you or We Who make them grow?

Insey khetiyan tum ugatey ho ya unke ugane waley hum hain

لَوۡ نَشَآءُ لَجَـعَلۡنٰهُ حُطَامًا فَظَلۡتُمۡ تَفَكَّهُوۡنَ‏ ٦٥

If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim:

Hum chahein to un khetoun ko bhus (rubble) bana kar rakh dein aur tum tarah tarah ki baatein banate reh jao

اِنَّا لَمُغۡرَمُوۡنَۙ‏ ٦٦

“We have been penalised;

Ke hum par to ulti chatti pad gayi (Lo! we are laden with debt)

بَلۡ نَحۡنُ مَحۡرُوۡمُوۡنَ‏ ٦٧

nay; we have been undone!”

Balke humarey to naseeb hi phootey huey hain

اَفَرَءَيۡتُمُ الۡمَآءَ الَّذِىۡ تَشۡرَبُوۡنَؕ‏ ٦٨

Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink?

Kabhi tumne aankhein khol kar dekha, yeh paani jo tum peetey ho

ءَاَنۡـتُمۡ اَنۡزَلۡـتُمُوۡهُ مِنَ الۡمُزۡنِ اَمۡ نَحۡنُ الۡمُنۡزِلُوۡنَ‏  ٦٩

Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down?

Isey tumne baadal se barsaya hai ya iske barsane wale hum hain

لَوۡ نَشَآءُ جَعَلۡنٰهُ اُجَاجًا فَلَوۡلَا تَشۡكُرُوۡنَ‏ ٧٠

If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks?

Hum chahein to isey sakht khari(bitter) bana kar rakh dein, phir kyun tum shukar guzar nahin hotey

اَفَرَءَيۡتُمُ النَّارَ الَّتِىۡ تُوۡرُوۡنَؕ‏ ٧١

Did you consider the fire which you kindle?

Kabhi tumne khayal kiya, yeh aag jo tum sulgate ho

ءَاَنۡتُمۡ اَنۡشَاۡتُمۡ شَجَرَتَهَاۤ اَمۡ نَحۡنُ الۡمُنۡشِـُٔـوۡنَ‏ ٧٢

Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow?

Iska darakht tum ne paida kiya hai ya iske paida karne wale hum hain

نَحۡنُ جَعَلۡنٰهَا تَذۡكِرَةً وَّمَتَاعًا لِّلۡمُقۡوِيۡنَ​ۚ‏ ٧٣

We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy.
