080 surah

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلّٰٓىۙ‏ ١

He frowned and turned away

[The prophet] Tursh-rooh (frowned) hua aur berukhi barti

اَنۡ جَآءَهُ الۡاَعۡمٰىؕ‏ ٢

that the blind man came to him.

Is baat par ke woh andha us ke paas aa gaya

وَمَا يُدۡرِيۡكَ لَعَلَّهٗ يَزَّكّٰٓىۙ‏ ٣

How could you know? Perhaps he would cleanse himself,

Tumhe kya khabar, shayad woh sudhar jaye

اَوۡ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنۡفَعَهُ الذِّكۡرٰىؕ‏ ٤

or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him.

ya naseehat par dhyaan de aur naseeat karna us ke liye nafea(faiydamand) ho

اَمَّا مَنِ اسۡتَغۡنٰىۙ‏ ٥

Now he who waxes indifferent,

Jo shaks be-parwahi baratta hai

فَاَنۡتَ لَهٗ تَصَدّٰىؕ‏ ٦

you attend to him,

Uski taraf to tum tawajjuh karte ho

وَمَا عَلَيۡكَ اَلَّا يَزَّكّٰٓىؕ‏ ٧

though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself.

Halaanke agar wo na sudhrey to tum par uski kya zimmedari hai

وَاَمَّا مَنۡ جَآءَكَ يَسۡعٰىۙ‏ ٨

But he who comes to you running,

Aur jo khud tumharey paas dauda aata hai

وَهُوَ يَخۡشٰىۙ‏ ٩

and fears (Allah),

Aur woh darr raha hota hai

فَاَنۡتَ عَنۡهُ تَلَهّٰى​ۚ‏ ١٠

you pay no heed to him.

Usse tum berukhi barat-tey ho

كَلَّاۤ اِنَّهَا تَذۡكِرَةٌ ۚ‏ ١١

No indeed; this is only a Reminder.

Hargiz nahin yeh to ek naseehat hai

فَمَنۡ شَآءَ ذَكَرَهٗ​ۘ‏ ١٢

So whoso wills may give heed to it.

jiska jee chahey isey qabool karey

فِىۡ صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍۙ‏ ١٣

It is contained in scrolls highly honoured,

Yeh aisey saheefon mein darj hai jo mukarram hain

مَّرۡفُوۡعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍ ۭۙ‏ ١٤

most exalted and purified,

Buland martaba hain, pakeeza hain

بِاَيۡدِىۡ سَفَرَةٍۙ‏ ١٥

borne by the hands of scribes,

muazzaz aur neik kaatibon ke

كِرَامٍۢ بَرَرَةٍؕ‏ ١٦

noble and purified.

haathon mein rehete hain

قُتِلَ الۡاِنۡسَانُ مَاۤ اَكۡفَرَهٗؕ‏ ١٧

Accursed be man! How stubbornly he denies the Truth.

Laanat ho Insan par kaisa sakht munkir-e-haq (denies the Truth) hai yeh

مِنۡ اَىِّ شَىۡءٍ خَلَقَهٗؕ‏ ١٨

Out of what did Allah create him?

Kis cheez se Allah ne isey paida kiya hai

مِنۡ نُّطۡفَةٍؕ خَلَقَهٗ فَقَدَّرَهٗ ۙ‏ ١٩

Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him,

Nutfa ki ek boondh se Allah ne isey paida kiya phir iski taqdeer muqarrar ki

ثُمَّ السَّبِيۡلَ يَسَّرَهٗۙ‏ ٢٠

and then made the course of life easy for him,

Phir iske liye zindagi ki raah aasan ki

ثُمَّ اَمَاتَهٗ فَاَقۡبَرَهٗۙ‏ ٢١

then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave,

Phir isey maut di aur qabr mei pahunchaya

ثُمَّ اِذَا شَآءَ اَنۡشَرَهٗؕ‏ ٢٢

and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life.

Phir jab chahey woh isey dobara utha khada karey

كَلَّا لَـمَّا يَقۡضِ مَاۤ اَمَرَهٗؕ‏ ٢٣

Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him.

Hargiz nahi, isney woh farz ada nahi kiya jiska Allah ne isey hukum diya tha

فَلۡيَنۡظُرِ الۡاِنۡسَانُ اِلٰى طَعَامِهٖۤۙ‏ ٢٤

So let man just consider his food:

Phir zara insaan apni khuraak(khane/food) ko dekhe

اَنَّا صَبَبۡنَا الۡمَآءَ صَبًّا ۙ‏ ٢٥

We poured water, pouring it in great abundance,

Humne khoob paani lundhaya(poured)

ثُمَّ شَقَقۡنَا الۡاَرۡضَ شَقًّا ۙ‏ ٢٦

and cleaved the earth, cleaving it asunder;

Phir zameen ko ajeeb tarah phada

فَاَنۡۢبَتۡنَا فِيۡهَا حَبًّا ۙ‏ ٢٧

then caused the grain to grow out of it,

phir us ke andar ugaye galley(grain)

وَّ عِنَبًا وَّقَضۡبًا ۙ‏ ٢٨

together with grapes and vegetables,

Aur angoor aur tarkariyan

وَّزَيۡتُوۡنًا وَّنَخۡلًا ؕ‏ ٢٩

and olives and palms,

Aur zaitoon aur khajoorein

وَحَدَآٮِٕقَ غُلۡبًا ۙ‏ ٣٠

and dense orchards,

Aur ghaney baagh(orchards)

وَّفَاكِهَةً وَّاَبًّا ۙ‏ ٣١

and fruits and pastures –

Aur tarah tarah ke phal aur chaarey

مَّتَاعًا لَّـكُمۡ وَلِاَنۡعَامِكُمۡؕ‏ ٣٢

all this as a provision for you and your cattle.

Tumharey liye aur tumharey maweshion(cattles) ke liye saman-e-zeist(provision )ke taur par

فَاِذَا جَآءَتِ الصَّآخَّةُ‏ ٣٣

But when the deafening cry shall be sounded

Aakhir-e-kaar jab woh kaan behrey kar deney wali aawaz buland hogi

يَوۡمَ يَفِرُّ الۡمَرۡءُ مِنۡ اَخِيۡهِۙ‏ ٣٤

on the Day when each man shall flee from his brother,

Us roz aadmi apne bhai

وَاُمِّهٖ وَاَبِيۡهِۙ‏ ٣٥

and his mother and his father;

Aur apni maa aur apne baap

وَصَاحِبَتِهٖ وَبَنِيۡهِؕ‏ ٣٦

and his consort and his children;

Aur apni biwi aur apni aulad se bhagega

لِكُلِّ امۡرِیءٍ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَوۡمَٮِٕذٍ شَاۡنٌ يُّغۡنِيۡهِؕ‏ ٣٧

on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself.

Unmein har shaks par us din aisa waqt aa padega ke usay apne siwa kisi ka hosh na hoga

وُجُوۡهٌ يَّوۡمَٮِٕذٍ مُّسۡفِرَةٌ ۙ‏ ٣٨

Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness,

Kuch chehrey us roz damak rahe hongey

ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسۡتَبۡشِرَةٌ ۚ‏ ٣٩

and be cheerful and joyous.

Hashash bashash aur khush o khurram hongey

وَوُجُوۡهٌ يَّوۡمَٮِٕذٍ عَلَيۡهَا غَبَرَةٌ ۙ‏ ٤٠

Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden,

Aur kuch chehron par uss roz khaak(dust) udd rahi hogi

تَرۡهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ ؕ‏ ٤١

enveloped by darkness.

Aur kalons(darkness) chayi hui hogi

اُولٰٓٮِٕكَ هُمُ الۡكَفَرَةُ الۡفَجَرَةُ‏ ٤٢

These will be the unbelievers, the wicked.

Yahi kafir o fajir (unbelivers and wicked) log hain
