Kasam hai taare ki jabke woh guroob hua

your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded;

nor does he speak out of his desire.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Woh apni khwaish-e-nafs se nahin bolta

This is nothing but a revelation that is conveyed to him,

Yeh to ek wahee (Inspiration /revelation) hai jo uspar nazil ki jati hai

something that a very powerful one has imparted to him,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Usey zabardast quwwat waley ne taleem di hai

one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised,

Jo bada sahib-e-hikmat hai

being on the higher horizon.

Woh saamne aa khada hua jabke woh balaii ufuq par tha(highest part of the horizon)

Then he drew near and hung above suspended,

Phir kareeb aaya aur upar muallak ho gaya.(approached and descended)

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Tab usne Allah ke banday ko wahee (revelation) pahunchayi jo wahee (revelation) bhi usey pahunchani thi

Are you, then, going to contend with him regarding what he sees with his eyes?

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Ab kya tum us cheez par ussey jhagadte ho jisey woh aankhon se dekhta hai

Indeed he saw him a second time,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur ek martaba phir usney

by the lote-tree at the farthest boundary,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Sidratul muntaha ke paas usko (Angel Gibriel) dekha

near which is the Garden of Abode.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Jahan paas hi jannat-ul-maawa hai

and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur usney apne Rubb ki badi badi nishaniyan dekhi

Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Ab zara batao , tumne kabhi is Laat aur is Uzza (names of pagan idols)

and about the third deity, al-Manat?

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur tisri (third) ek aur devi Manaat ki haqeeqat par kuch gaur bhi kiya

Shall you have the male issues, and He the female issues?

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Kya betay (sons) tumhare liye hain aur betiyan (daughters) khuda ke liye

That is indeed an unfair division!

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Yeh to badi dhandhli (unjust/unfair) ki taqseem hui

These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him?

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Kya insaan jo kuch chaahe uske liye wahi haqq hai

To Allah belong both the Next World and the present.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Duniya aur aakhirat ka maalik to Allah hi hai

Numerous are the angels in the heavens; yet their intercession shall be of no avail, except in regard to those whom He grants the leave of intercession and whose plea He is pleased to accept.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aasmano mein kitne hi farishte maujood hain, un ki shafaat (intercession) kuch bhi kaam nahin aa sakti jab tak ke Allah kisi aisey shaks ke haqq mein uski ijazat na dey jiske liye woh koi arzdaasht (plea) sunna chahe aur usko pasand karey

Those who do not believe in the Hereafter give angels the names of females,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Magar jo log aakhirat ko nahin maante woh farishton ko deviyon (godess) ke naamo se mausoom karte hain

although they have no knowledge regarding that. They only follow their conjecture and conjecture can never take the place of the Truth.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Halaanke is maamle ka koi ilm (knowledge) unhein haasil nahin hai.

So leave alone those who turn away from the remembrance of Us and who seek nothing but the life of the world –

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Pas aey Nabi, jo shaks hamarey zikr se mooh pherta hai, aur duniya ki zindagi ke siwa jise kuch matloob nahin hai, usey uske haal par chodh do

that being the utmost of their knowledge. Surely your Lord fully knows those who have strayed away from His Path and He also fully knows those who are rightly guided.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

In logon ka mablag-e-ilm (utmost of their knowledge) bas yahi kuch hai, yeh baat tera Rubb hi zyada jaanta hai ke uske raaste se kaun bhatak gaya hai aur kaun seedhe raaste par hai

To Allah alone belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. He will requite the evil-doers for their deeds and bestow a goodly reward on those who have done good,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur zameen aur aasmaano ki har cheez ka maalik Allah hi hai.

on those who avoid grave sins and shameful deeds, even if they may sometimes stumble into lesser offences. Surely your Lord is abounding in His Forgiveness. Very well is He aware of you since He produced you from the earth, and while you were still in your mothers' wombs and not yet born. So do not boastfully claim yourselves to be purified. He fully knows those that are truly Godfearing.

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Jo badey badey gunahon aur khule khule qabeeh afaal (shameful deeds) se parheiz karte hain, illa yeh ke kuch kasoor unse sarzad ho jaye. Wahi behtar jaanta hai ke waqai muttaqi kaun hai

(O Prophet), did you see him who turned away (from the Path of Allah),

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Phir aey Nabi, tumne us shaks ko bhi dekha jo raah-e-khuda se phir gaya

who gave a little, and then stopped?

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Aur thoda sa de kar ruk gaya

Does he have any knowledge of the world beyond the ken of sense-perception, and therefore, clearly sees (the Truth)?

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Kya uske paas gaib ka ilm hai ke woh haqeeqat ko dekh raha hai
