As-Saffat

Surah 37

037 surah

وَالصّٰٓفّٰتِ صَفًّا ۙ‏ ١

By those who range themselves in rows;

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Qataar dar qataar saff baandhne walon ki kasam

فَالزّٰجِرٰتِ زَجۡرًا ۙ‏ ٢

by those who reprove severely,

Phir unki kasam jo daatne phatkaar ne waley hain

فَالتّٰلِيٰتِ ذِكۡرًا ۙ‏ ٣

and those who recite the Exhortation;

Phir unki kasam jo kalaam e naseehat sunane waley hain

اِنَّ اِلٰهَكُمۡ لَوَاحِدٌ ؕ‏ ٤

surely your God is One,

Tumhara mabood e haqiqi bas ek hi hai

رَبُّ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ الۡمَشَارِقِ ؕ‏ ٥

the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of whatever lies between the two, the Lord of the Easts.

Woh jo zameen aur aasmaano ka aur tamaam un cheezon ka maalik hai jo zameen o aasmaan mein hain, aur saarey mashrikon(easts) ka maalik

اِنَّا زَيَّنَّا السَّمَآءَ الدُّنۡيَا بِزِيۡنَةِ اۨلۡكَوَاكِبِۙ‏ ٦

We have adorned the lower heaven with the adornment of the stars

Humne aasmaan e duniya ko taaron ki zeenat se aarasta (adorn) kiya hai

وَحِفۡظًا مِّنۡ كُلِّ شَيۡطٰنٍ مَّارِدٍ​ۚ‏ ٧

and have protected it from every rebellious satan.

Aur har shaytan sarkash se isko mehfooz kardiya hai

لَّا يَسَّمَّعُوۡنَ اِلَى الۡمَلَاِ الۡاَعۡلٰى وَيُقۡذَفُوۡنَ مِنۡ كُلِّ جَانِبٍۖ ‏ ٨

These satans cannot listen to what transpires in the High Council for they are pelted away from every side

Yeh shayateen mala-e-aala (High Council) ki baatein nahin sun saktey, har taraf se maarey aur haankey jatey hain

دُحُوۡرًا  وَّلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ وَّاصِبٌ  ۙ‏ ٩

and are repelled. Theirs is an unceasing chastisement.

Aur inke liye paiham azaaab hai

اِلَّا مَنۡ خَطِفَ الۡخَطۡفَةَ فَاَتۡبَعَهٗ شِهَابٌ ثَاقِبٌ‏ ١٠

And if any is able to snatch a fragment, he is pursued by a piercing flame.

Taaham agar koi inmein se kuch ley uday to ek teiz shola uska peecha karta hai

فَاسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ اَهُمۡ اَشَدُّ خَلۡقًا اَمۡ مَّنۡ خَلَقۡنَاؕ اِنَّا خَلَقۡنٰهُمۡ مِّنۡ طِيۡنٍ لَّازِبٍ‏ ١١

So ask them (that is, human beings): “Were they harder to create than the objects We created?” We created them from sticky clay.

Ab insey pucho, inki paidaish zyada mushkil hai ya un cheezon ki jo humne paida kar rakkhi hain? Inko to humne leis daar gaaray(sticky clay/chickni mitti) se paida kiya hai

بَلۡ عَجِبۡتَ وَيَسۡخَرُوۡنَ‏ ١٢

You marvel (at the wondrous creations of Allah) and they scoff at it,

Tum (Allah ki qudrat ke karishmon par) hairan ho aur yeh iska mazaak uda rahey hain

وَاِذَا ذُكِّرُوۡا لَا يَذۡكُرُوۡنَ‏ ١٣

and when they are admonished, they pay no heed;

Samjhaya jaata hai to samajh kar nahin detey

وَاِذَا رَاَوۡا اٰيَةً يَّسۡتَسۡخِرُوۡنَ‏ ١٤

and if they see any Sign, they laugh it away

Koi nishani dekhte hain to usey thatton (mazaak/mock) mein udatey hain

وَقَالُوۡۤا اِنۡ هٰذَاۤ اِلَّا سِحۡرٌ مُّبِيۡنٌ​ ۖ​ۚ‏ ١٥

and say: “This is nothing but plain sorcery.

Aur kehte hain “ yeh to sareeh jaadu hai

ءَاِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُـنَّا تُرَابًا وَّعِظَامًا ءَاِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوۡثُوۡنَۙ‏  ١٦

Is it ever possible that after we die and are reduced to dust and (a skeleton of) bones, we will be raised to life?

Bhala kahin aisa ho sakta hai ke jab hum mar chuke hon aur mitti ban jayein aur haddiyon ka panjar reh jaye us waqt hum phir zinda karke utha khade kiye jayein

اَوَاٰبَآؤُنَا الۡاَوَّلُوۡنَؕ‏ ١٧

And so also shall our forefathers of yore be raised to life?”

Aur kya hamare agle waqton ke aaba o ajdaad bhi uthaye jayenge?”

قُلۡ نَعَمۡ وَاَنۡـتُمۡ دٰخِرُوۡنَ​ۚ‏ ١٨

Tell them: “Yes; and you are utterly helpless (against Allah).”

(insey kaho haan, aur tum) khuda ke muqable mein baybas ho

فَاِنَّمَا هِىَ زَجۡرَةٌ وَّاحِدَةٌ فَاِذَا هُمۡ يَنۡظُرُوۡنَ‏ ١٩

There will be a single stern rebuff and lo, they will be observing with their own eyes (all that they had been warned against).

Bas ek hi jhidki hogi aur yakayak yeh apni aankhon se (woh sab kuch jiski khabar di jaa rahi hai) dekh rahey hongey

وَقَالُوۡا يٰوَيۡلَنَا هٰذَا يَوۡمُ الدِّيۡنِ‏ ٢٠

They will then say: “Woe for us. This is the Day of Judgement.”

Us waqt yeh kahengey “ haaye hamari kambakhti , yeh to yaum ul jaza hai”

هٰذَا يَوۡمُ الۡفَصۡلِ الَّذِىۡ كُنۡتُمۡ بِهٖ تُكَذِّبُوۡنَ‏ ٢١

“Yes, this is the Day of Final Decision that you used to deny as a lie.”

“yeh wahi faisley ka din hai jisey tum jhutlaya karte thay”

اُحۡشُرُوا الَّذِيۡنَ ظَلَمُوۡا وَاَزۡوَاجَهُمۡ وَمَا كَانُوۡا يَعۡبُدُوۡنَۙ‏  ٢٢

(Then will the command be given): “Muster all the wrong-doers and their spouses and the deities whom they used to serve

(Hukum hoga) gher lao sab zaalimon aur unke saathiyon aur un maboodon ko jinki woh khuda ko chodh kar bandagi kiya karte thay

مِنۡ دُوۡنِ اللّٰهِ فَاهۡدُوۡهُمۡ اِلٰى صِرَاطِ الۡجَحِيۡمِ‏ ٢٣

apart from Allah, and direct them to the path of Hell,

Phir un sab ko jahannum ka raasta dikhao

وَقِفُوۡهُمۡ​ اِنَّهُمۡ مَّسْـُٔـوۡلُوۡنَۙ‏ ٢٤

and detain them there; they will be called to account.

Aur zara inhein thehrao, inse kuch puchna hai

مَا لَـكُمۡ لَا تَنَاصَرُوۡنَ‏ ٢٥

How is it that you are not helping one another?

“Kya ho gaya tumhein, ab kyun ek dusre ki madad nahin karte

بَلۡ هُمُ الۡيَوۡمَ مُسۡتَسۡلِمُوۡنَ‏ ٢٦

Indeed, today they are surrendering themselves completely.”

(Arey, aaj to yeh apne aap ko) aur ek dusre ko hawaliye (surrender) kiye de rahe hain”

وَاَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلٰى بَعۡضٍ يَّتَسَآءَلُوۡنَ‏ ٢٧

They will then turn towards each other (and start wrangling).

Iske baad yeh ek dusre ki taraf mudenge aur baham takrar shuru kar dengey

قَالُوۡۤا اِنَّكُمۡ كُنۡتُمۡ تَاۡتُوۡنَنَا عَنِ الۡيَمِيۡنِ‏ ٢٨

(The followers will say to their leaders): “You used to come to us from the right hand.”

pairvi karne waley apne peshwaon[leaders] se) kahenge, “Tum hamare paas seedhay rukh se aate thay”

قَالُوۡا بَلْ لَّمۡ تَكُوۡنُوۡا مُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ​ۚ‏ ٢٩

They will say: “Nay, you yourselves were not the ones who would believe.

Woh jawaab dengey “nahin balke tum khud iman laney waley na thay

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَيۡكُمۡ مِّنۡ سُلۡطٰنِ​ۚ بَلۡ كُنۡتُمۡ قَوۡمًا طٰغِيۡنَ‏  ٣٠

We had no power over you. You were a rebellious people,

Hamara tumpar koi zoar na tha, tum khud hi sarkash log thay

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

فَحَقَّ عَلَيۡنَا قَوۡلُ رَبِّنَآ ۖ اِنَّا لَذَآٮِٕقُوۡنَ‏ ٣١

and so we became deserving of the Word of our Lord that we shall be made to suffer chastisement.

Aakhir e kaar hum apne Rubb ke is farmaan ke mustahiq ho gaye ke hum azaab ka maza chakhne waley hain

فَاَغۡوَيۡنٰكُمۡ اِنَّا كُنَّا غٰوِيۡنَ‏ ٣٢

So we led you astray; we ourselves were strayed.”

So humne tumko behkaya, hum khud behke huye thay”

فَاِنَّهُمۡ يَوۡمَٮِٕذٍ فِى الۡعَذَابِ مُشۡتَرِكُوۡنَ‏ ٣٣

On that Day, they will all share the chastisement.

Is taraah woh sab us roz azaab mein mushtarik (shareek) hongey

اِنَّا كَذٰلِكَ نَفۡعَلُ بِالۡمُجۡرِمِيۡنَ‏ ٣٤

Thus do We treat the culprits.

Hum mujreemon ke saath yahi kuch kiya karte hain

اِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوۡۤا اِذَا قِيۡلَ لَهُمۡ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُۙ يَسۡتَكۡبِرُوۡنَۙ‏  ٣٥

Whenever it was said to them: “There is no true deity apart from Allah,” they waxed proud

Yeh woh log thay ke jab unsey kaha jata “Allah ke siwa koi maabood e barhaqq nahin hai” to yeh ghamand mein aa jatey thay

وَيَقُوۡلُوۡنَ اَٮِٕنَّا لَتٰرِكُوۡۤا اٰلِهَـتِنَا لِشَاعِرٍ مَّجۡـنُوۡنٍ ؕ‏ ٣٦

and said: “Shall we forsake our deities for the sake of a distracted poet?”

Aur kehte thay “kya hum ek shayar majnoon (dewane) ki khaatir apne maboodon ko chodh dein?”

بَلۡ جَآءَ بِالۡحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ الۡمُرۡسَلِيۡنَ‏ ٣٧

(They say so although) he brought the Truth and confirmed the veracity of the Messengers.

Halaanke woh haqq lekar aaya tha aur usne Rasoolon ki tasdeeq ki thi

اِنَّكُمۡ لَذَآٮِٕقُوا الۡعَذَابِ الۡاَلِيۡمِ​ۚ‏ ٣٨

(They will be told): “You shall taste the grievous chastisement.

(Ab unse kaha jayega ke) tum laaziman dardnaak saza ka maza chakhne waley ho

وَمَا تُجۡزَوۡنَ اِلَّا مَا كُنۡتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُوۡنَۙ‏ ٣٩

You will only be recompensed according to your deeds.”

Aur tumhein jo badla bhi diya jaa raha hai unhi aamaal ka diya ja raha hai jo tum karte rahey ho

اِلَّا عِبَادَ اللّٰهِ الۡمُخۡلَصِيۡنَ‏ ٤٠

But Allah's chosen servants (shall be spared this woeful end).

Magar Allah ke cheeda (chune huey/chosen) banday (is anjaam e badd se) mehfooz hongey

اُولٰٓٮِٕكَ لَهُمۡ رِزۡقٌ مَّعۡلُوۡمٌۙ‏ ٤١

For them awaits a known provision,

Unke liye jaana bujha rizq (known provision) hai

فَوَاكِهُ​ۚ وَهُمۡ مُّكۡرَمُوۡنَۙ‏ ٤٢

a variety of delicious fruits; and they shall be honoured

Har tarah ki lazeez cheezein

فِىۡ جَنّٰتِ النَّعِيۡمِۙ‏ ٤٣

in the Gardens of Bliss.

Aur niyamat bhari jannatein

عَلٰى سُرُرٍ مُّتَقٰبِلِيۡنَ‏ ٤٤

They will be seated upon couches set face to face;

Jinmein woh izzat ke saath rakkhey jayenge, takhaton par aamne saamne baithenge

يُطَافُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ بِكَاۡسٍ مِّنۡ مَّعِيۡنٍۢ ۙ‏ ٤٥

a cup filled with wine from its springs, will be passed around to them;

Sharaab ke chamson (springs) se sagar (cups) bhar bhar kar unke darmiyan phiraye jayenge

بَيۡضَآءَ لَذَّةٍ لِّلشّٰرِبِيۡنَ​ ۖ​ۚ‏ ٤٦

white, sparkling (wine), a delight to the drinkers.

Chamakti hui sharaab, jo peene waalon ke liye lazzat hogi

لَا فِيۡهَا غَوۡلٌ وَّلَا هُمۡ عَنۡهَا يُنۡزَفُوۡنَ‏ ٤٧

There will neither be any harm in it for their body nor will it intoxicate their mind.

Na unke jism ko ussey koi zarar hoga aur na unki aqal ussey kharab hogi

وَعِنۡدَهُمۡ قٰصِرٰتُ الطَّرۡفِ عِيۡنٌۙ‏ ٤٨

Theirs shall be wide-eyed maidens with bashful, restrained glances,

Aur unke paas nigahein bachane wali, khoobsurat aankhon wali auratein hongi

كَاَنَّهُنَّ بَيۡضٌ مَّكۡنُوۡنٌ‏ ٤٩

so delicate as the hidden peel under an egg's shell.

Aisi naazuk jaise andey (egg) ke chilke ke nichey chupi hui jhilli

فَاَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلٰى بَعۡضٍ يَّتَسَآءَلُوۡنَ‏ ٥٠

Then some of them will turn to others, and will ask each other.

Phir woh ek dusre ki taraf mutawajjeh ho kar halaat puchengey

قَالَ قَآٮِٕلٌ مِّنۡهُمۡ اِنِّىۡ كَانَ لِىۡ قَرِيۡنٌۙ‏ ٥١

One of them will say: “I had a companion in the world

Unmein se ek kahega, “duniya mein mera ek hum nahseen (companion) tha

يَقُوۡلُ اَءِ نَّكَ لَمِنَ الۡمُصَدِّقِيۡنَ‏ ٥٢

who used to say: �Are you also one of those who confirm the Truth (of life after death)?

Jo mujhse kaha karta tha, kya tum bhi tasdeeq karne walon mein se ho

ءَاِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَّعِظَامًا ءَاِنَّا لَمَدِيۡنُوۡنَ‏ ٥٣

After we are dead and have become all dust and bones shall we still be requited?'

Kya waqayi jab hum mar chuke hongey aur mitti ho jayenge aur haddiyon ka panjar bankar reh jayenge to humein jaza o saza di jayegi

قَالَ هَلۡ اَنۡتُمۡ مُّطَّلِعُوۡنَ‏ ٥٤

He will say: �Do you wish to know where he is now?'

Ab kya aap log dekhna chahte hain ke woh sahib ab kahan hain?”

فَاطَّلَعَ فَرَاٰهُ فِىۡ سَوَآءِ الۡجَحِيۡمِ‏ ٥٥

Then he will look downwards, and will see him in the depths of Hell.

Yeh keh kar junhi woh jhukega to jahannum ki gehrayi mein usko dekh lega

قَالَ تَاللّٰهِ اِنۡ كِدْتَّ لَـتُرۡدِيۡنِۙ‏ ٥٦

He will say to him: �By Allah, you almost ruined me.

Aur ussey khitaab karke kahega “khuda ki kasam, tu to mujhey tabaah hi kar dene wala tha

وَلَوۡلَا نِعۡمَةُ رَبِّىۡ لَـكُنۡتُ مِنَ الۡمُحۡضَرِيۡنَ‏ ٥٧

But for Allah's favour, I should be one of those who have been mustered here.

Mere Rubb ka fazal shamil e haal na hota to aaj main bhi un logon mein se hota jo pakde huey aaye hain

اَفَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَيِّتِيۡنَۙ‏ ٥٨

So, are we not going to die,

Accha to kya ab hum marne waley nahin hain

اِلَّا مَوۡتَتَـنَا الۡاُوۡلٰى وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِيۡنَ‏ ٥٩

except for our first death? And shall we suffer no chastisement?'”

Maut jo humein aani thi woh bas pehle aa chuki? Ab humein koi azaab nahin hona?”

اِنَّ هٰذَا لَهُوَ الۡفَوۡزُ الۡعَظِيۡمُ‏ ٦٠

Surely this is the supreme triumph.

Yakeenan yahi azeem o shaan kaamiyabi hai

لِمِثۡلِ هٰذَا فَلۡيَعۡمَلِ الۡعٰمِلُوۡنَ‏ ٦١

For the like of it should the workers work.

Aisi hi kamiyabi ke liye amal karne walon ko amal karna chahiye

اَذٰ لِكَ خَيۡرٌ نُّزُلًا اَمۡ شَجَرَةُ الزَّقُّوۡمِ‏ ٦٢

Is this a better hospitality or the tree of al-Zaqqum?

Bolo, yeh ziyafat acchi hai ya zakkhum ka darakht

اِنَّا جَعَلۡنٰهَا فِتۡنَةً لِّلظّٰلِمِيۡنَ‏ ٦٣

We have made this tree a trial for the wrong-doers.

Humne us darakht ko zaalimon ke liye fitna bana diya hai

اِنَّهَا شَجَرَةٌ تَخۡرُجُ فِىۡۤ اَصۡلِ الۡجَحِيۡمِۙ‏ ٦٤

It is a tree that grows in the nethermost part of Hell.

طَلۡعُهَا كَاَنَّهٗ رُءُوۡسُ الشَّيٰطِيۡنِ‏ ٦٥

Its spathes are like the heads of satans.

(The people of Hell) will surely eat of it, filling their bellies with it.

Jahannum ke log usey khayenge aur usi se pait bharengey

ثُمَّ اِنَّ لَهُمۡ عَلَيۡهَا لَشَوۡبًا مِّنۡ حَمِيۡمٍ​ۚ‏ ٦٧

Then on top of it they will have a brew of boiling water.

Phir ispar peene ke liye khaulta hua pani milega

ثُمَّ اِنَّ مَرۡجِعَهُمۡ لَا۟اِلَى الۡجَحِيۡمِ‏ ٦٨

Then their return will be to the same blazing Hell.

Aur iske baad unki wapsi usi aatish e dozakh (blazing Hell) ki taraf hogi

These are the ones who found their fathers steeped in error,

and they are running in their footsteps.

Aur unhi ke nakshe qadam par daud chale

وَلَـقَدۡ ضَلَّ قَبۡلَهُمۡ اَكۡثَرُ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَۙ‏ ٧١

Before them a multitude of people of olden times had erred,

Halaanke unse pehle bahut se log gumraah ho chuke thay

وَلَقَدۡ اَرۡسَلۡنَا فِيۡهِمۡ مُّنۡذِرِيۡنَ‏ ٧٢

and We had sent among them Messengers to warn them.

Aur unmein humne tambeeh (warn) karne walay Rasool bheje thay

Observe, then, what was the end of those that had been warned,

except for the chosen servants of Allah?

Is bad-anjaami se bas Allah ke wahi banday bachay hain jinhein usne apne liye khalis karliya hai

وَلَقَدۡ نَادٰٮنَا نُوۡحٌ فَلَنِعۡمَ الۡمُجِيۡبُوۡنَ  ۖ‏ ٧٥

Noah had called upon Us (earlier). See, how excellent We were in answering him!

Humko (issey pehle) Nooh ne pukara tha, to dekho ke hum kaise acche jawab dene waley thay

We delivered him and his household from the great calamity;

and made his offspring the only ones to survive,

Aur usi ki nasal ko baaki rakkha

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ فِى الۡاٰخِرِيۡنَ  ۖ‏ ٧٨

and We established for him a good name among posterity.

Aur baad ki nasalon mein iski taarif o tausif chodh di

سَلٰمٌ عَلٰى نُوۡحٍ فِى الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَ‏ ٧٩

Peace be upon Noah among all the nations.

Salaam hai Nooh par tamaam duniya walon mein

اِنَّا كَذٰلِكَ نَجۡزِى الۡمُحۡسِنِيۡنَ‏ ٨٠

Thus do We reward all those who do good.

When he came to his Lord with a pure heart,

and said to his father and his people: “Whom do you worship?

Jab usne apne baap aur apni qaum se kaha “yeh kya cheezein hain jinki tum ibadat kar rahey ho

اَٮِٕفۡكًا اٰلِهَةً دُوۡنَ اللّٰهِ تُرِيۡدُوۡنَؕ‏ ٨٦

Is it false deities that you want to serve rather than Allah?

Kya Allah ko chodh kar jhoot ghadey huey maabood chahte ho

فَمَا ظَنُّكُمۡ بِرَبِّ الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَ‏ ٨٧

What do you think of the Lord of the whole Universe?”

Aakhir Allah Rubb-ul-Aalameen ke baarey mein tumhara kya gumaan hai?”

فَنَظَرَ نَظۡرَةً فِى النُّجُوۡمِۙ‏ ٨٨

Then he looked carefully at the stars

Phir usne taaron par ek nigaah daali

فَقَالَ اِنِّىۡ سَقِيۡمٌ‏ ٨٩

and said: “I am sick.”

فَتَوَلَّوۡا عَنۡهُ مُدۡبِرِيۡنَ‏ ٩٠

So turning their backs, they went away from him.

Chunanche woh log usey chodh kar chale gaye

فَرَاغَ اِلٰٓى اٰلِهَتِهِمۡ فَقَالَ اَلَا تَاۡكُلُوۡنَ​ۚ‏ ٩١

Then he went quietly to the (temple of the deities) and said: “What is the matter with you, why do you not eat?

Unke peechey woh chupke se unke maboodon ke mandir mein ghus gaya aur bola “aap log khate kyun nahin hain

مَا لَـكُمۡ لَا تَنۡطِقُوۡنَ‏ ٩٢

What is the matter with you, why do you not speak?”

Then he turned upon them, striking them with his right hand,

Iske baad woh unpar pil (toot) pada aur seedhay haath se khoob zarbein lagayi (todhna shuru kiya)

فَاَقۡبَلُوۡۤا اِلَيۡهِ يَزِفُّوۡنَ‏ ٩٤

whereupon people came to him running.

(Wapas aakar) woh log bhaage bhaage uske paas aaye

قَالَ اَتَعۡبُدُوۡنَ مَا تَنۡحِتُوۡنَۙ‏ ٩٥

Abraham said to them: “Do you worship what you yourselves have carved with your own hands

Usne kaha “kya tum apni hi tarashi hui cheezon ko poojhte ho

وَاللّٰهُ خَلَقَكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ‏ ٩٦

while it is Allah Who has created you and all that you make?”

Halaanke Allah hi ne tumko bhi paida kiya hai aur un cheezon ko bhi jinhein tum banatey ho”

قَالُوا ابۡنُوۡا لَهٗ بُنۡيَانًا فَاَلۡقُوۡهُ فِى الۡجَحِيۡمِ‏ ٩٧

They spoke among themselves: “Build him a pyre and then throw him into the furnace.”

Unhon ne aapas mein kaha “ iske liya ek alaaw (pyre) tayyar karo aur isey dehakti hui aag ke dhair mein phenk do”

فَاَرَادُوۡا بِهٖ كَيۡدًا فَجَعَلۡنٰهُمُ الۡاَسۡفَلِيۡنَ‏ ٩٨

They had contrived an evil plan against him, but We abased them all.

Unhon ne uske khilaf ek karawayi karna chahi thi, magar humne unhi ko nicha dikha diya

وَقَالَ اِنِّىۡ ذَاهِبٌ اِلٰى رَبِّىۡ سَيَهۡدِيۡنِ‏ ٩٩

Abraham said: “I am going to my Lord; He will guide me.

Ibrahim ne kaha “ main apne Rubb ki taraf jata hoon, wahi meri rehnumayi karega

رَبِّ هَبۡ لِىۡ مِنَ الصّٰلِحِيۡنَ‏ ١٠٠

Lord, grant me a righteous son.”

فَبَشَّرۡنٰهُ بِغُلٰمٍ حَلِيۡمٍ‏ ١٠١

(In response to this prayer) We gave him the good news of a prudent boy;

فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ السَّعۡىَ قَالَ يٰبُنَىَّ اِنِّىۡۤ اَرٰى فِى الۡمَنَامِ اَنِّىۡۤ اَذۡبَحُكَ فَانْظُرۡ مَاذَا تَرٰى​ؕ قَالَ يٰۤاَبَتِ افۡعَلۡ مَا تُؤۡمَرُ​ سَتَجِدُنِىۡۤ اِنۡ شَآءَ اللّٰهُ مِنَ الصّٰبِرِيۡنَ‏ ١٠٢

and when he was old enough to go about and work with him, (one day) Abraham said to him: “My son, I see in my dream that I am slaughtering you. So consider (and tell me) what you think.” He said: “Do as you are bidden. You will find me, if Allah so wills, among the steadfast.”

Woh ladka jab uske saath daud dhoop karne ki umar ko pahunch gaya to ( ek roz) Ibrahim ne ussey kaha, “beta, main khwab mein dekhta hoon ke main tujhey zibaah kar raha hoon, ab tu bata, tera kya khayal hai?” usne kaha, “abbajan , jo kuch aapko hukum diya jaa raha hai usey kar daliye, aap insha Allah mujhey saabiron(sabr karne walon) mein se payenge”

فَلَمَّاۤ اَسۡلَمَا وَتَلَّهٗ لِلۡجَبِيۡنِ​ۚ‏ ١٠٣

When both surrendered (to Allah's command) and Abraham flung the son down on his forehead,

Aakhir ko jab in dono ne sar-e-tasleem kham kardiya aur Ibrahim ne bete ko maathay ke bal gira diya

وَنَادَيۡنٰهُ اَنۡ يّٰۤاِبۡرٰهِيۡمُۙ‏ ١٠٤

We cried out: “O Abraham,

قَدۡ صَدَّقۡتَ الرُّءۡيَا ​ ​ۚ اِنَّا كَذٰلِكَ نَجۡزِى الۡمُحۡسِنِيۡنَ‏ ١٠٥

you have indeed fulfilled your dream. Thus do We reward the good-doers.”

Tu nay khwab sach kar dikhaya hum neki karne walon ko aisi hi jaza deta hain

اِنَّ هٰذَا لَهُوَ الۡبَلٰٓؤُا الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ ١٠٦

This was indeed a plain trial.

Yaqeenan yeh ek khuli aazmaaish thi”

وَفَدَيۡنٰهُ بِذِبۡحٍ عَظِيۡمٍ‏ ١٠٧

And We ransomed him with a mighty sacrifice,

Aur humne ek badi qurbani fidiye mein de kar us bacchey ko chuda liya

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ فِى الۡاٰخِرِيۡنَ​ۖ‏ ١٠٨

and We preserved for him a good name among posterity.

Aur uski taarif o tauseef hamesha ke liye baad ki nasalon mein chodh di

وَبٰرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ وَعَلٰٓى اِسۡحٰقَ​ؕ وَ مِنۡ ذُرِّيَّتِهِمَا مُحۡسِنٌ وَّظَالِمٌ لِّنَفۡسِهٖ مُبِيۡنٌ​‏ ١١٣

And We blessed him and Isaac. Among the offspring of the two some did good and some plainly wronged themselves.

Aur usey aur Ishaq ko barakat di. Ab in dono ki zurriyat mein se koi mohsin hai aur koi apne nafs par sareeh zulm karne wala hai

وَلَقَدۡ مَنَنَّا عَلٰى مُوۡسٰى وَهٰرُوۡنَ​ۚ‏ ١١٤

Verily We bestowed Our favours on Moses and Aaron

Aur humne Moosa o Haroon par ehsan kiya

وَنَجَّيۡنٰهُمَا وَقَوۡمَهُمَا مِنَ الۡكَرۡبِ الۡعَظِيۡمِ​ۚ‏ ١١٥

and We delivered both of them and their people from the great calamity.

Unko aur unki qaum ko karb-e-azeem( badi museebat) se nijaat di

وَنَصَرۡنٰهُمۡ فَكَانُوۡا هُمُ الۡغٰلِبِيۡنَ​ۚ‏ ١١٦

We succoured them, and they gained the upper hand (against their enemies).

Unhein nusrat bakshi jiski wajah se wahi galib rahey

وَاٰتَيۡنٰهُمَا الۡكِتٰبَ الۡمُسۡتَبِيۡنَ​ۚ‏ ١١٧

We granted them a Clear Book,

Unko nihayat wazeh kitaab ata ki

وَهَدَيۡنٰهُمَا الصِّرَاطَ الۡمُسۡتَقِيۡمَ​ۚ‏ ١١٨

and showed them the Straight Way,

Unhein raah-e-raast dikhayi

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمَا فِى الۡاٰخِرِيۡنَۙ‏ ١١٩

and preserved for them a good name among posterity.

Aur baad ki nasalon mein unka zikr e khair baaqi rakkha

سَلٰمٌ عَلٰى مُوۡسٰى وَهٰرُوۡنَ‏ ١٢٠

Peace be upon Moses and Aaron.

Salaam hai Mossa aur Haroon par

Surely, Elias too was among the Messengers.

Aur Ilyas bhi yaqeenan mursaleen(messengers) mein se tha

(Call to mind) when he said to his people: “Will you not fear Allah?

Yaad karo jab usne apni qaum se kaha tha ke “tum log darte nahin ho

اَتَدۡعُوۡنَ بَعۡلًا وَّتَذَرُوۡنَ اَحۡسَنَ الۡخٰلِقِيۡنَۙ‏ ١٢٥

Do you call upon Baal and forsake the Best of the Creators?

Kya tum BAAL ko pukarte ho aur ahsanul khaliqeen ko chodh dete ho

اللّٰهَ رَبَّكُمۡ وَرَبَّ اٰبَآٮِٕكُمُ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَ‏ ١٢٦

Allah is your Lord and the Lord of your ancestors of yore.”

Us Allah ko jo tumhara aur tumhare agle pichle aaba o ajdaad ka Rubb hai?”

But they denounced him as a liar, so they will surely be arraigned (for punishment),

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ فِى الۡاٰخِرِيۡنَۙ‏ ١٢٩

We preserved a good name for him among posterity.

(Call to mind) when We delivered him and all his kinsfolk,

Yaad karo jab humne usko aur uske sab gar walon ko nijaat di

اِلَّا عَجُوۡزًا فِى الۡغٰبِرِيۡنَ‏ ١٣٥

except for an old woman who was among those that stayed behind.

Siwaye ek budiya ke jo peechey reh janey walon mein se thi

ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا الۡاٰخَرِيۡنَ‏ ١٣٦

Then We utterly destroyed the rest of them.

Phir baaki sabko tehas nehas kardiya

You pass by their desolate habitations in the morning

Aaj tum shab-o-roz unke ujday dayar (desolate habitations) par se guzarte ho

and at night. Do you still not understand?

Call to mind when he fled to the laden ship,

cast lots, and was among the losers.

Phir quora andazi (cast lots) mein shareek hua aur usmein maath khayi (among the losers)

Then a fish swallowed him, and he was blameworthy.

Aakhir e kaar machli ne usey nigal liya aur woh malamat zada tha

فَلَوۡلَاۤ اَنَّهٗ كَانَ مِنَ الۡمُسَبِّحِيۡنَۙ‏ ١٤٣

Had he not been one of those who glorify Allah,

Ab agar woh tasbeeh karne walon mein se na hota to

لَلَبِثَ فِىۡ بَطۡنِهٖۤ اِلٰى يَوۡمِ يُبۡعَثُوۡنَ​ۚ‏ ١٤٤

he would certainly have remained in its belly till the Day of Resurrection.

Roz-e-qayamat tak usi machli ke pait mein rehta

فَنَبَذۡنٰهُ بِالۡعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ سَقِيۡمٌ​ۚ‏ ١٤٥

But We threw him on a wide bare tract of land while he was ill;

Aakhir humne usey badi sakheem (bimar /ill) halat mein ek chatiyal zameen par phenk diya

وَاَنۡۢبَتۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ شَجَرَةً مِّنۡ يَّقۡطِيۡنٍ​ۚ‏ ١٤٦

and caused a gourd tree to grow over him,

Aur uspar ek bail-daar darakht (a spreading plant of the gourd kind) uga diya

وَاَرۡسَلۡنٰهُ اِلٰى مِائَةِ اَلۡفٍ اَوۡ يَزِيۡدُوۡنَ​ۚ‏ ١٤٧

and We sent him forth to a nation of a hundred thousand or more,

Iske baad humne usey ek lakh ya us sey zayad logon ki taraf bheja

فَاٰمَنُوۡا فَمَتَّعۡنٰهُمۡ اِلٰى حِيۡنٍؕ‏ ١٤٨

and they believed. So We let them enjoy life for a while.

Woh imaan laye aur humne ek waqt e khaas tak unhein baaqi rakkha

فَاسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ اَلِرَبِّكَ الۡبَنَاتُ وَلَهُمُ الۡبَنُوۡنَۙ‏ ١٤٩

So ask their opinion: “(Are you convinced) that your Lord should have daughters and you should have sons?

Phir zara in logon se pucho, kya (inke dil ko yeh baat lagti hai ke) tumhare Rubb ke liye to hon betiyan aur inke liye hon betay

اَمۡ خَلَقۡنَا الۡمَلٰٓٮِٕكَةَ اِنَاثًا وَّهُمۡ شٰهِدُوۡنَ‏ ١٥٠

Did We create the angels as females the while they witnessed?”

Kya waqayi humne malaika (farishton) ko auratein banaya hai aur yeh aankhon dekhi baat keh rahey hain

اَلَاۤ اِنَّهُمۡ مِّنۡ اِفۡكِهِمۡ لَيَقُوۡلُوۡنَۙ‏ ١٥١

Behold, it is one of their fabrications that they say:

Khoob sun rakkho, dar-asal yeh log apni mann ghadat se yeh baat kehte hain

وَلَدَ اللّٰهُۙ وَاِنَّهُمۡ لَـكٰذِبُوۡنَ‏ ١٥٢

“Allah has begotten.” They are liars!

Ke Allah aulad rakhta hai, aur fil waqayi yeh jhootey hain

اَصۡطَفَى الۡبَنَاتِ عَلَى الۡبَنِيۡنَؕ‏ ١٥٣

Did He choose daughters rather than sons?

Kya Allah ne beton ke bajaye betiyan apne liye pasand karli

مَا لَـكُمۡ كَيۡفَ تَحۡكُمُوۡنَ‏ ١٥٤

What is the matter with you that you make such strange judgements?

Tumhein kya ho gaya hai, kaise hukum laga rahey ho

اَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُوۡنَ​ۚ‏ ١٥٥

Will you then not take heed?

Kya tumhein hosh nahin aata

اَمۡ لَـكُمۡ سُلۡطٰنٌ مُّبِيۡنٌۙ‏ ١٥٦

Do you have any clear authority for such claims?

Ya phir tumhare paas apni in baaton ke liye koi saaf sanad (daleel) hai

فَاۡتُوۡا بِكِتٰبِكُمۡ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ صٰدِقِيۡنَ‏ ١٥٧

Bring your Book, if you are truthful.

To lao apni woh kitaab agar tum sachhey ho

وَجَعَلُوۡا بَيۡنَهٗ وَبَيۡنَ الۡجِنَّةِ نَسَبًا ؕ​ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمَتِ الۡجِنَّةُ اِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُوۡنَۙ‏ ١٥٨

They have established a kinship between Allah and the angels; and the angels know well that these people will be arraigned (as culprits).

Inhon ne Allah aur malaika ke darmiyan nasab (kinship)ka rishta bana rakkha hai, halanke malaika khoob jaante hain ke yeh log mujrim ki haisiyat se pesh honay waley hain

سُبۡحٰنَ اللّٰهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُوۡنَۙ‏ ١٥٩

(They say): “Exalted be Allah above what they attribute to Him,

Jo uske khaalis bandon ke siwa dusre log uski taraf mansoob karte hain

فَاِنَّكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡبُدُوۡنَۙ‏ ١٦١

So you and your deities

مَاۤ اَنۡـتُمۡ عَلَيۡهِ بِفٰتِنِيۡنَۙ‏ ١٦٢

shall not be able to tempt anyone away from Allah

اِلَّا مَنۡ هُوَ صَالِ الۡجَحِيۡمِ‏ ١٦٣

except him who shall roast in the Blazing Fire.

Magar sifr usko jo dozakh ki bhadakti hui aag mein jhulasne wala ho

وَمَا مِنَّاۤ اِلَّا لَهٗ مَقَامٌ مَّعۡلُوۡمٌۙ‏ ١٦٤

As for us, there is none but has an appointed station.

Aur hamara haal to yeh hai ke hum mein se har ek ka ek muqaam mukarrar hai

وَّاِنَّا لَـنَحۡنُ الصَّآفُّوۡنَ​ۚ‏ ١٦٥

Verily we range ourselves in rows (as humble servants)

Aur hum saff basta (in rows) khidmatgaar hain

وَاِنَّا لَـنَحۡنُ الۡمُسَبِّحُوۡنَ‏ ١٦٦

and we are of those who glorify Allah.”

Tasbeeh karne waley hain.”

وَاِنۡ كَانُوۡا لَيَقُوۡلُوۡنَۙ‏ ١٦٧

They used to say before:

Yeh log pehle to kaha karte thay

لَوۡ اَنَّ عِنۡدَنَا ذِكۡرًا مِّنَ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَۙ‏ ١٦٨

“If only we had the Reminder which had been granted to the people of yore

Ke kaash hamare paas woh “Zikr” hota jo pichli qaumon ko mila tha

لَـكُنَّا عِبَادَ اللّٰهِ الۡمُخۡلَصِيۡنَ‏ ١٦٩

we would surely have been Allah's chosen servants.”

To hum Allah ke cheedah (chune huey/chosen) banday hotay

فَكَفَرُوۡا بِهٖ​ فَسَوۡفَ يَعۡلَمُوۡنَ‏ ١٧٠

But when it came to them, they rejected it. They shall soon come to know (the end of such an attitude).

Magar (jab woh aa gaya) to inhon ne uska inkar kardiya, ab ankareeb inhein (is rawish ka natija) maloom ho jayega

وَلَقَدۡ سَبَقَتۡ كَلِمَتُنَا لِعِبَادِنَا الۡمُرۡسَلِيۡنَ ​ۖ​ۚ‏ ١٧١

We have already given Our promise to Our Messengers

Apne bheje huey bandon se hum pehle hi waada kar chuke hain

اِنَّهُمۡ لَهُمُ الۡمَنۡصُوۡرُوۡنَ ‏ ١٧٢

that they shall certainly be succoured,

Ke yaqeenan unki madad ki jayegi

وَاِنَّ جُنۡدَنَا لَهُمُ الۡغٰلِبُوۡنَ‏ ١٧٣

and that Our hosts shall triumph.

Aur hamara lashkar hi gaalib hokar rahega

فَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتّٰى حِيۡنٍۙ‏ ١٧٤

So, (O Prophet), leave them alone for a while,

Pas (aey Nabi) zara kuch muddat tak inhein inke haal par chodh do

وَاَبۡصِرۡهُمۡ فَسَوۡفَ يُبۡصِرُوۡنَ‏ ١٧٥

and see, and soon they too shall see.

Aur dekhte raho, anqareeb yeh khud bhi dekh lengey

اَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسۡتَعۡجِلُوۡنَ‏ ١٧٦

Do they seek to hasten Our chastisement?

Kya yeh hamare azaab ke liye jaldi macha rahey hain

فَاِذَا نَزَلَ بِسَاحَتِهِمۡ فَسَآءَ صَبَاحُ الۡمُنۡذَرِيۡنَ‏ ١٧٧

When that chastisement will descend upon their courtyard, evil shall that Day be for those who had been warned.

Jab woh inke sehan (maidan/open space) mein aa utrega woh din un logon ke liye bahut bura hoga jinhein mutanabbeh (warn) kiya ja chuka hai

Leave them alone for a while,

وَّاَبۡصِرۡ فَسَوۡفَ يُبۡصِرُوۡنَ‏ ١٧٩

and see; and they too shall soon see.

Aur dekhte raho, anqareeb yeh khud dekh lenge

سُبۡحٰنَ رَبِّكَ رَبِّ الۡعِزَّةِ عَمَّا يَصِفُوۡنَ​ۚ‏ ١٨٠

Exalted be your Lord, the Lord of Glory, above what they attribute to Him,

Paak hai tera Rubb, izzat ka maalik, un tamaam baaton se jo yeh log bana rahey hain

and peace be upon the Messengers,
