As-Saffat

Surah 37

037 surah

وَالصّٰٓفّٰتِ صَفًّا ۙ‏ ١

By those who range themselves in rows;

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Qataar dar qataar saff baandhne walon ki kasam

فَالزّٰجِرٰتِ زَجۡرًا ۙ‏ ٢

by those who reprove severely,

Phir unki kasam jo daatne phatkaar ne waley hain

فَالتّٰلِيٰتِ ذِكۡرًا ۙ‏ ٣

and those who recite the Exhortation;

Phir unki kasam jo kalaam e naseehat sunane waley hain

اِنَّ اِلٰهَكُمۡ لَوَاحِدٌ ؕ‏ ٤

surely your God is One,

Tumhara mabood e haqiqi bas ek hi hai

رَبُّ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ الۡمَشَارِقِ ؕ‏ ٥

the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of whatever lies between the two, the Lord of the Easts.

Woh jo zameen aur aasmaano ka aur tamaam un cheezon ka maalik hai jo zameen o aasmaan mein hain, aur saarey mashrikon(easts) ka maalik

اِنَّا زَيَّنَّا السَّمَآءَ الدُّنۡيَا بِزِيۡنَةِ اۨلۡكَوَاكِبِۙ‏ ٦

We have adorned the lower heaven with the adornment of the stars

Humne aasmaan e duniya ko taaron ki zeenat se aarasta (adorn) kiya hai

وَحِفۡظًا مِّنۡ كُلِّ شَيۡطٰنٍ مَّارِدٍ​ۚ‏ ٧

and have protected it from every rebellious satan.

Aur har shaytan sarkash se isko mehfooz kardiya hai

لَّا يَسَّمَّعُوۡنَ اِلَى الۡمَلَاِ الۡاَعۡلٰى وَيُقۡذَفُوۡنَ مِنۡ كُلِّ جَانِبٍۖ ‏ ٨

These satans cannot listen to what transpires in the High Council for they are pelted away from every side

Yeh shayateen mala-e-aala (High Council) ki baatein nahin sun saktey, har taraf se maarey aur haankey jatey hain

دُحُوۡرًا  وَّلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ وَّاصِبٌ  ۙ‏ ٩

and are repelled. Theirs is an unceasing chastisement.

Aur inke liye paiham azaaab hai

اِلَّا مَنۡ خَطِفَ الۡخَطۡفَةَ فَاَتۡبَعَهٗ شِهَابٌ ثَاقِبٌ‏ ١٠

And if any is able to snatch a fragment, he is pursued by a piercing flame.

Taaham agar koi inmein se kuch ley uday to ek teiz shola uska peecha karta hai

فَاسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ اَهُمۡ اَشَدُّ خَلۡقًا اَمۡ مَّنۡ خَلَقۡنَاؕ اِنَّا خَلَقۡنٰهُمۡ مِّنۡ طِيۡنٍ لَّازِبٍ‏ ١١

So ask them (that is, human beings): “Were they harder to create than the objects We created?” We created them from sticky clay.

Ab insey pucho, inki paidaish zyada mushkil hai ya un cheezon ki jo humne paida kar rakkhi hain? Inko to humne leis daar gaaray(sticky clay/chickni mitti) se paida kiya hai

بَلۡ عَجِبۡتَ وَيَسۡخَرُوۡنَ‏ ١٢

You marvel (at the wondrous creations of Allah) and they scoff at it,

Tum (Allah ki qudrat ke karishmon par) hairan ho aur yeh iska mazaak uda rahey hain

وَاِذَا ذُكِّرُوۡا لَا يَذۡكُرُوۡنَ‏ ١٣

and when they are admonished, they pay no heed;

Samjhaya jaata hai to samajh kar nahin detey

وَاِذَا رَاَوۡا اٰيَةً يَّسۡتَسۡخِرُوۡنَ‏ ١٤

and if they see any Sign, they laugh it away

Koi nishani dekhte hain to usey thatton (mazaak/mock) mein udatey hain

وَقَالُوۡۤا اِنۡ هٰذَاۤ اِلَّا سِحۡرٌ مُّبِيۡنٌ​ ۖ​ۚ‏ ١٥

and say: “This is nothing but plain sorcery.

Aur kehte hain “ yeh to sareeh jaadu hai

ءَاِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُـنَّا تُرَابًا وَّعِظَامًا ءَاِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوۡثُوۡنَۙ‏  ١٦

Is it ever possible that after we die and are reduced to dust and (a skeleton of) bones, we will be raised to life?

Bhala kahin aisa ho sakta hai ke jab hum mar chuke hon aur mitti ban jayein aur haddiyon ka panjar reh jaye us waqt hum phir zinda karke utha khade kiye jayein

اَوَاٰبَآؤُنَا الۡاَوَّلُوۡنَؕ‏ ١٧

And so also shall our forefathers of yore be raised to life?”

Aur kya hamare agle waqton ke aaba o ajdaad bhi uthaye jayenge?”

قُلۡ نَعَمۡ وَاَنۡـتُمۡ دٰخِرُوۡنَ​ۚ‏ ١٨

Tell them: “Yes; and you are utterly helpless (against Allah).”

(insey kaho haan, aur tum) khuda ke muqable mein baybas ho

فَاِنَّمَا هِىَ زَجۡرَةٌ وَّاحِدَةٌ فَاِذَا هُمۡ يَنۡظُرُوۡنَ‏ ١٩

There will be a single stern rebuff and lo, they will be observing with their own eyes (all that they had been warned against).

Bas ek hi jhidki hogi aur yakayak yeh apni aankhon se (woh sab kuch jiski khabar di jaa rahi hai) dekh rahey hongey

وَقَالُوۡا يٰوَيۡلَنَا هٰذَا يَوۡمُ الدِّيۡنِ‏ ٢٠

They will then say: “Woe for us. This is the Day of Judgement.”

Us waqt yeh kahengey “ haaye hamari kambakhti , yeh to yaum ul jaza hai”

هٰذَا يَوۡمُ الۡفَصۡلِ الَّذِىۡ كُنۡتُمۡ بِهٖ تُكَذِّبُوۡنَ‏ ٢١

“Yes, this is the Day of Final Decision that you used to deny as a lie.”

“yeh wahi faisley ka din hai jisey tum jhutlaya karte thay”

اُحۡشُرُوا الَّذِيۡنَ ظَلَمُوۡا وَاَزۡوَاجَهُمۡ وَمَا كَانُوۡا يَعۡبُدُوۡنَۙ‏  ٢٢

(Then will the command be given): “Muster all the wrong-doers and their spouses and the deities whom they used to serve

(Hukum hoga) gher lao sab zaalimon aur unke saathiyon aur un maboodon ko jinki woh khuda ko chodh kar bandagi kiya karte thay

مِنۡ دُوۡنِ اللّٰهِ فَاهۡدُوۡهُمۡ اِلٰى صِرَاطِ الۡجَحِيۡمِ‏ ٢٣

apart from Allah, and direct them to the path of Hell,

Phir un sab ko jahannum ka raasta dikhao

وَقِفُوۡهُمۡ​ اِنَّهُمۡ مَّسْـُٔـوۡلُوۡنَۙ‏ ٢٤

and detain them there; they will be called to account.

Aur zara inhein thehrao, inse kuch puchna hai

مَا لَـكُمۡ لَا تَنَاصَرُوۡنَ‏ ٢٥

How is it that you are not helping one another?

“Kya ho gaya tumhein, ab kyun ek dusre ki madad nahin karte

بَلۡ هُمُ الۡيَوۡمَ مُسۡتَسۡلِمُوۡنَ‏ ٢٦

Indeed, today they are surrendering themselves completely.”

(Arey, aaj to yeh apne aap ko) aur ek dusre ko hawaliye (surrender) kiye de rahe hain”

وَاَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلٰى بَعۡضٍ يَّتَسَآءَلُوۡنَ‏ ٢٧

They will then turn towards each other (and start wrangling).

Iske baad yeh ek dusre ki taraf mudenge aur baham takrar shuru kar dengey

قَالُوۡۤا اِنَّكُمۡ كُنۡتُمۡ تَاۡتُوۡنَنَا عَنِ الۡيَمِيۡنِ‏ ٢٨

(The followers will say to their leaders): “You used to come to us from the right hand.”

pairvi karne waley apne peshwaon[leaders] se) kahenge, “Tum hamare paas seedhay rukh se aate thay”

قَالُوۡا بَلْ لَّمۡ تَكُوۡنُوۡا مُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ​ۚ‏ ٢٩

They will say: “Nay, you yourselves were not the ones who would believe.

Woh jawaab dengey “nahin balke tum khud iman laney waley na thay

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَيۡكُمۡ مِّنۡ سُلۡطٰنِ​ۚ بَلۡ كُنۡتُمۡ قَوۡمًا طٰغِيۡنَ‏  ٣٠

We had no power over you. You were a rebellious people,

Hamara tumpar koi zoar na tha, tum khud hi sarkash log thay

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

فَحَقَّ عَلَيۡنَا قَوۡلُ رَبِّنَآ ۖ اِنَّا لَذَآٮِٕقُوۡنَ‏ ٣١

and so we became deserving of the Word of our Lord that we shall be made to suffer chastisement.

Aakhir e kaar hum apne Rubb ke is farmaan ke mustahiq ho gaye ke hum azaab ka maza chakhne waley hain

فَاَغۡوَيۡنٰكُمۡ اِنَّا كُنَّا غٰوِيۡنَ‏ ٣٢

So we led you astray; we ourselves were strayed.”

So humne tumko behkaya, hum khud behke huye thay”

فَاِنَّهُمۡ يَوۡمَٮِٕذٍ فِى الۡعَذَابِ مُشۡتَرِكُوۡنَ‏ ٣٣

On that Day, they will all share the chastisement.

Is taraah woh sab us roz azaab mein mushtarik (shareek) hongey

اِنَّا كَذٰلِكَ نَفۡعَلُ بِالۡمُجۡرِمِيۡنَ‏ ٣٤

Thus do We treat the culprits.

Hum mujreemon ke saath yahi kuch kiya karte hain

اِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوۡۤا اِذَا قِيۡلَ لَهُمۡ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُۙ يَسۡتَكۡبِرُوۡنَۙ‏  ٣٥

Whenever it was said to them: “There is no true deity apart from Allah,” they waxed proud

Yeh woh log thay ke jab unsey kaha jata “Allah ke siwa koi maabood e barhaqq nahin hai” to yeh ghamand mein aa jatey thay

وَيَقُوۡلُوۡنَ اَٮِٕنَّا لَتٰرِكُوۡۤا اٰلِهَـتِنَا لِشَاعِرٍ مَّجۡـنُوۡنٍ ؕ‏ ٣٦

and said: “Shall we forsake our deities for the sake of a distracted poet?”

Aur kehte thay “kya hum ek shayar majnoon (dewane) ki khaatir apne maboodon ko chodh dein?”

بَلۡ جَآءَ بِالۡحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ الۡمُرۡسَلِيۡنَ‏ ٣٧

(They say so although) he brought the Truth and confirmed the veracity of the Messengers.

Halaanke woh haqq lekar aaya tha aur usne Rasoolon ki tasdeeq ki thi

اِنَّكُمۡ لَذَآٮِٕقُوا الۡعَذَابِ الۡاَلِيۡمِ​ۚ‏ ٣٨

(They will be told): “You shall taste the grievous chastisement.

(Ab unse kaha jayega ke) tum laaziman dardnaak saza ka maza chakhne waley ho

وَمَا تُجۡزَوۡنَ اِلَّا مَا كُنۡتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُوۡنَۙ‏ ٣٩

You will only be recompensed according to your deeds.”

Aur tumhein jo badla bhi diya jaa raha hai unhi aamaal ka diya ja raha hai jo tum karte rahey ho

اِلَّا عِبَادَ اللّٰهِ الۡمُخۡلَصِيۡنَ‏ ٤٠

But Allah's chosen servants (shall be spared this woeful end).

Magar Allah ke cheeda (chune huey/chosen) banday (is anjaam e badd se) mehfooz hongey

اُولٰٓٮِٕكَ لَهُمۡ رِزۡقٌ مَّعۡلُوۡمٌۙ‏ ٤١

For them awaits a known provision,

Unke liye jaana bujha rizq (known provision) hai

فَوَاكِهُ​ۚ وَهُمۡ مُّكۡرَمُوۡنَۙ‏ ٤٢

a variety of delicious fruits; and they shall be honoured

Har tarah ki lazeez cheezein

فِىۡ جَنّٰتِ النَّعِيۡمِۙ‏ ٤٣

in the Gardens of Bliss.

Aur niyamat bhari jannatein

عَلٰى سُرُرٍ مُّتَقٰبِلِيۡنَ‏ ٤٤

They will be seated upon couches set face to face;

Jinmein woh izzat ke saath rakkhey jayenge, takhaton par aamne saamne baithenge

يُطَافُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ بِكَاۡسٍ مِّنۡ مَّعِيۡنٍۢ ۙ‏ ٤٥

a cup filled with wine from its springs, will be passed around to them;

Sharaab ke chamson (springs) se sagar (cups) bhar bhar kar unke darmiyan phiraye jayenge

بَيۡضَآءَ لَذَّةٍ لِّلشّٰرِبِيۡنَ​ ۖ​ۚ‏ ٤٦

white, sparkling (wine), a delight to the drinkers.

Chamakti hui sharaab, jo peene waalon ke liye lazzat hogi

لَا فِيۡهَا غَوۡلٌ وَّلَا هُمۡ عَنۡهَا يُنۡزَفُوۡنَ‏ ٤٧

There will neither be any harm in it for their body nor will it intoxicate their mind.

Na unke jism ko ussey koi zarar hoga aur na unki aqal ussey kharab hogi

وَعِنۡدَهُمۡ قٰصِرٰتُ الطَّرۡفِ عِيۡنٌۙ‏ ٤٨

Theirs shall be wide-eyed maidens with bashful, restrained glances,

Aur unke paas nigahein bachane wali, khoobsurat aankhon wali auratein hongi

كَاَنَّهُنَّ بَيۡضٌ مَّكۡنُوۡنٌ‏ ٤٩

so delicate as the hidden peel under an egg's shell.

Aisi naazuk jaise andey (egg) ke chilke ke nichey chupi hui jhilli

فَاَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلٰى بَعۡضٍ يَّتَسَآءَلُوۡنَ‏ ٥٠

Then some of them will turn to others, and will ask each other.

Phir woh ek dusre ki taraf mutawajjeh ho kar halaat puchengey

قَالَ قَآٮِٕلٌ مِّنۡهُمۡ اِنِّىۡ كَانَ لِىۡ قَرِيۡنٌۙ‏ ٥١

One of them will say: “I had a companion in the world

Unmein se ek kahega, “duniya mein mera ek hum nahseen (companion) tha

يَقُوۡلُ اَءِ نَّكَ لَمِنَ الۡمُصَدِّقِيۡنَ‏ ٥٢

who used to say: �Are you also one of those who confirm the Truth (of life after death)?

Jo mujhse kaha karta tha, kya tum bhi tasdeeq karne walon mein se ho

ءَاِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَّعِظَامًا ءَاِنَّا لَمَدِيۡنُوۡنَ‏ ٥٣

After we are dead and have become all dust and bones shall we still be requited?'

Kya waqayi jab hum mar chuke hongey aur mitti ho jayenge aur haddiyon ka panjar bankar reh jayenge to humein jaza o saza di jayegi

قَالَ هَلۡ اَنۡتُمۡ مُّطَّلِعُوۡنَ‏ ٥٤

He will say: �Do you wish to know where he is now?'

Ab kya aap log dekhna chahte hain ke woh sahib ab kahan hain?”

فَاطَّلَعَ فَرَاٰهُ فِىۡ سَوَآءِ الۡجَحِيۡمِ‏ ٥٥

Then he will look downwards, and will see him in the depths of Hell.

Yeh keh kar junhi woh jhukega to jahannum ki gehrayi mein usko dekh lega

قَالَ تَاللّٰهِ اِنۡ كِدْتَّ لَـتُرۡدِيۡنِۙ‏ ٥٦

He will say to him: �By Allah, you almost ruined me.

Aur ussey khitaab karke kahega “khuda ki kasam, tu to mujhey tabaah hi kar dene wala tha

وَلَوۡلَا نِعۡمَةُ رَبِّىۡ لَـكُنۡتُ مِنَ الۡمُحۡضَرِيۡنَ‏ ٥٧

But for Allah's favour, I should be one of those who have been mustered here.

Mere Rubb ka fazal shamil e haal na hota to aaj main bhi un logon mein se hota jo pakde huey aaye hain

اَفَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَيِّتِيۡنَۙ‏ ٥٨

So, are we not going to die,

Accha to kya ab hum marne waley nahin hain

اِلَّا مَوۡتَتَـنَا الۡاُوۡلٰى وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِيۡنَ‏ ٥٩

except for our first death? And shall we suffer no chastisement?'”

Maut jo humein aani thi woh bas pehle aa chuki? Ab humein koi azaab nahin hona?”

اِنَّ هٰذَا لَهُوَ الۡفَوۡزُ الۡعَظِيۡمُ‏ ٦٠

Surely this is the supreme triumph.

Yakeenan yahi azeem o shaan kaamiyabi hai

لِمِثۡلِ هٰذَا فَلۡيَعۡمَلِ الۡعٰمِلُوۡنَ‏ ٦١

For the like of it should the workers work.

Aisi hi kamiyabi ke liye amal karne walon ko amal karna chahiye

اَذٰ لِكَ خَيۡرٌ نُّزُلًا اَمۡ شَجَرَةُ الزَّقُّوۡمِ‏ ٦٢

Is this a better hospitality or the tree of al-Zaqqum?

Bolo, yeh ziyafat acchi hai ya zakkhum ka darakht

اِنَّا جَعَلۡنٰهَا فِتۡنَةً لِّلظّٰلِمِيۡنَ‏ ٦٣

We have made this tree a trial for the wrong-doers.

Humne us darakht ko zaalimon ke liye fitna bana diya hai

اِنَّهَا شَجَرَةٌ تَخۡرُجُ فِىۡۤ اَصۡلِ الۡجَحِيۡمِۙ‏ ٦٤

It is a tree that grows in the nethermost part of Hell.

طَلۡعُهَا كَاَنَّهٗ رُءُوۡسُ الشَّيٰطِيۡنِ‏ ٦٥

Its spathes are like the heads of satans.

Uske shagufe (emerging fruit) aise hain jaise shaytano ke sar

فَاِنَّهُمۡ لَاٰكِلُوۡنَ مِنۡهَا فَمٰلِــُٔــوۡنَ مِنۡهَا الۡبُطُوۡنَ ؕ‏  ٦٦

(The people of Hell) will surely eat of it, filling their bellies with it.

Jahannum ke log usey khayenge aur usi se pait bharengey

ثُمَّ اِنَّ لَهُمۡ عَلَيۡهَا لَشَوۡبًا مِّنۡ حَمِيۡمٍ​ۚ‏ ٦٧

Then on top of it they will have a brew of boiling water.

Phir ispar peene ke liye khaulta hua pani milega

ثُمَّ اِنَّ مَرۡجِعَهُمۡ لَا۟اِلَى الۡجَحِيۡمِ‏ ٦٨

Then their return will be to the same blazing Hell.

Aur iske baad unki wapsi usi aatish e dozakh (blazing Hell) ki taraf hogi

These are the ones who found their fathers steeped in error,

فَهُمۡ عَلٰٓى اٰثٰرِهِمۡ يُهۡرَعُوۡنَ‏ ٧٠

and they are running in their footsteps.

Aur unhi ke nakshe qadam par daud chale

وَلَـقَدۡ ضَلَّ قَبۡلَهُمۡ اَكۡثَرُ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَۙ‏ ٧١

Before them a multitude of people of olden times had erred,

Halaanke unse pehle bahut se log gumraah ho chuke thay

and We had sent among them Messengers to warn them.

Observe, then, what was the end of those that had been warned,
