Surah 79

079 surah

وَالنّٰزِعٰتِ غَرۡقًا ۙ‏ ١

By those (angels) that pluck out the soul from depths,

— A. Maududi (English Tafhim commentary)

Kasam hai un (Farishton) ki jo doob kar khinchte hain

وَّالنّٰشِطٰتِ نَشۡطًا ۙ‏ ٢

and gently take it away;

aur aahistagi se (gently) nikaal le jataey hain

وَّالسّٰبِحٰتِ سَبۡحًا ۙ‏ ٣

and by those that speedily glide along (the cosmos),

Aur (un farishton ki jo qayinaat mein) tezi se tairtey phirtay hain

فَالسّٰبِقٰتِ سَبۡقًا ۙ‏ ٤

and vie with the others(in carrying out their Lord's behests);

phir (hukum baja laane mein) sabqat karte hain

فَالۡمُدَبِّرٰتِ اَمۡرًا​ ۘ‏ ٥

and then manage the affairs of the Universe(according to their Lord's commands).

phir (ehkam-ilahi ke mutabiq) maamlaat ka intizam chalate hain

يَوۡمَ تَرۡجُفُ الرَّاجِفَةُ ۙ‏ ٦

The Day when the quaking will cause a violent convulsion,

Jis roz hila marey ga zalzalay ka jhatka

تَتۡبَعُهَا الرَّادِفَةُ ؕ‏ ٧

and will be followed by another quaking.

Aur uske pichey ek aur jhatka padega

قُلُوۡبٌ يَّوۡمَٮِٕذٍ وَّاجِفَةٌ ۙ‏ ٨

On that Day some hearts shall tremble (with fright),

Kuch dil hongey jo us roz khauf se kaanp rahey hongey

اَبۡصَارُهَا خَاشِعَةٌ​ ۘ‏ ٩

and their eyes shall be downcast with dread.

Nigahein unki sehmi(downcast) hui hogi

يَقُوۡلُوۡنَ ءَاِنَّا لَمَرۡدُوۡدُوۡنَ فِى الۡحَـافِرَةِ ؕ‏ ١٠

They say: “Shall we indeed be restored to life,

Yeh log kehte hain “Kya waqai hum palta kar phir wapas laaye jayenge?”

ءَاِذَا كُنَّا عِظَامًا نَّخِرَةً ؕ‏ ١١

even after we have been reduced to bones, hollow and rotten?”

“Kya jab hum khokli boseeda (hollow and rotten) haddiyan ban chuke hongey?”

قَالُوۡا تِلۡكَ اِذًا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٌ​ ۘ‏ ١٢

They say: “That will then be a return with a great loss!”

Kehne lagey “yeh wapsi to phir badey ghatey(nuksan) ki hogi”

فَاِنَّمَا هِىَ زَجۡرَةٌ وَّاحِدَةٌ ۙ‏ ١٣

Surely they will need no more than a single stern blast,

Halaanke yeh bas itna kaam hai ke ek zoar ki daant padegi

فَاِذَا هُمۡ بِالسَّاهِرَةِ ؕ‏ ١٤

and lo, they will all be in the open plain.

Aur yakayk yeh khule maidan mein maujood hongey

هَلۡ اَتٰٮكَ حَدِيۡثُ مُوۡسٰى​ۘ‏ ١٥

Has Moses' story reached you?

Kya tumhein Moosa ke qissey ki khabar pahunchi hai

اِذۡ نَادٰٮهُ رَبُّهٗ بِالۡوَادِ الۡمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى​ۚ‏ ١٦

When his Lord called him in the sacred valley of Tuwa,

Jab uske Rubb ne usey Tuwa ke muqaddas wadi(valley) mein pukara tha

اِذۡهَبۡ اِلٰى فِرۡعَوۡنَ اِنَّهٗ طَغٰى ۖ‏ ١٧

and directed him: “Go to Pharaoh, he has rebelled,

Ke Firaun ke paas ja, woh sarkash ho gaya hai

فَقُلۡ هَلۡ لَّكَ اِلٰٓى اَنۡ تَزَكّٰى ۙ‏ ١٨

and say to him: 'Are you willing to be purified,

Aur ussey keh, kya tu iske liye tayyar hai ke pakeezgi ikhtiyar karey

وَاَهۡدِيَكَ اِلٰى رَبِّكَ فَتَخۡشٰى​ۚ‏ ١٩

that I may direct you to your Lord and then you hold Him in awe?' ”

Aur mai terey Rubb ki taraf teri rehnumai karoon to (uska) khauf terey andar paida ho?”

فَاَرٰٮهُ الۡاٰيَةَ الۡكُبۡرٰى ۖ‏ ٢٠

Then Moses (went to Pharaoh and) showed him the Great Sign;

Phir Moosa ne (Firaun ke paas ja kar) usko badi nishani dikhai

فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصٰى ۖ‏ ٢١

but he denied it as false and disobeyed,

Magar usne jhutla diya aur na mana

ثُمَّ اَدۡبَرَ يَسۡعٰىۖ‏ ٢٢

and then he turned back to have recourse to his craftiness,

Phir chaal baaziyan karne ke liye palta

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

فَحَشَرَ فَنَادٰىۖ‏ ٢٣

and gathered his people and declared:

Aur logon ko jama karke usne pukaar kar kaha

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

فَقَالَ اَنَا رَبُّكُمُ الۡاَعۡلٰى ۖ‏ ٢٤

“I am the supreme lord of you all.”

“Main tumhara sabse bada Rubb hoon”

فَاَخَذَهُ اللّٰهُ نَڪَالَ الۡاٰخِرَةِ وَالۡاُوۡلٰى ؕ‏ ٢٥

Thereupon Allah seized him for the chastisement of the World to Come as well as of the present.

Aakhir-e-kaar Allah ne usey aakhirat aur duniya ke azaab mei pakad liya

اِنَّ فِىۡ ذٰلِكَ لَعِبۡرَةً لِّمَنۡ يَّخۡشٰىؕ‏ ٢٦

Surely there is a great lesson in it for whoever would fear (Allah).

Dar haqeeqat is mein badi ibrat hai har us shaks ke liye jo darey

ءَاَنۡتُمۡ اَشَدُّ خَلۡقًا اَمِ السَّمَآءُ​ ؕ بَنٰٮهَا‏ ٢٧

Is it harder to create you or the heaven? But Allah built it,

Kya tum logon ki takhleeq(paidaish) zyada sakht kaam hai ya aasmaan ki? Allah ne usko banaya

رَفَعَ سَمۡكَهَا فَسَوَّٮهَا ۙ‏ ٢٨

and raised its vault high and proportioned it;

Uski chhat(ceiling) khoob unchi uthayi phir uska tawazun qayam kiya(proportioned it)

وَ اَغۡطَشَ لَيۡلَهَا وَاَخۡرَجَ ضُحٰٮهَا‏ ٢٩

and covered its night with darkness and brought forth from it its day;

Aur uski raat dhaanki aur uska din nikala

وَالۡاَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ ذٰلِكَ دَحٰٮهَا ؕ‏ ٣٠

and thereafter spread out the earth,

Iske baad zameen ko usne bichaya

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

اَخۡرَجَ مِنۡهَا مَآءَهَا وَمَرۡعٰٮهَا‏ ٣١

and brought out of it its water and its pasture,

Uske andar se uska paani aur chara nikala

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

وَالۡجِبَالَ اَرۡسٰٮهَا ۙ‏ ٣٢

and firmly fixed in it mountains;

Aur pahad usmein gaadh diye

مَتَاعًا لَّـكُمۡ وَلِاَنۡعَامِكُمۡؕ‏ ٣٣

all this as provision for you and your cattle.

Saaman-e-zeist(provision) ke taur par tumharay liye aur tumharey maweshion ke liye

فَاِذَا جَآءَتِ الطَّآمَّةُ الۡكُبۡرٰى ۖ‏ ٣٤

But when the great calamity will come about

Phir jab woh hungama-e-azeem barpa hoga

يَوۡمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ الۡاِنۡسَانُ مَا سَعٰىۙ‏ ٣٥

on the Day when man will recall all his strivings,

Jis roz Insan apna sab kiya dhara yaad karega

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

وَبُرِّزَتِ الۡجَحِيۡمُ لِمَنۡ يَّرٰى‏ ٣٦

and Hell will be brought in sight for anyone to see:

Aur har dekhne wale ke samney dozak khol kar rakh di jayegi

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

فَاَمَّا مَنۡ طَغٰىۙ‏ ٣٧

then he who transgressed

To jisne sarkashi(transgress) ki thi

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

وَاٰثَرَ الۡحَيٰوةَ الدُّنۡيَا ۙ‏ ٣٨

and preferred the life of this world,

Aur dunya ki zindagi ko tarjeeh di thi

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

فَاِنَّ الۡجَحِيۡمَ هِىَ الۡمَاۡوٰىؕ‏ ٣٩

most surely his abode shall be Hell.

dozakh hi uska thikana hogi

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

وَاَمَّا مَنۡ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهٖ وَ نَهَى النَّفۡسَ عَنِ الۡهَوٰىۙ‏ ٤٠

But he who feared to stand before his Lord, and restrained himself from evil desires,

Aur jisne apne Rubb ke samney khade honay ka khauf kiya tha aur nafs ko buri khwaishaat se baaz rakha tha

فَاِنَّ الۡجَـنَّةَ هِىَ الۡمَاۡوٰىؕ‏ ٤١

most surely his abode shall be Paradise.

Jannat uska thikana hogi

يَسۡـــَٔلُوۡنَكَ عَنِ السَّاعَةِ اَيَّانَ مُرۡسٰٮهَا ؕ‏ ٤٢

They ask you about the Hour: “When will it be?”

Yeh log tumse puchte hain ke aakhir woh ghadi kab aakar thehre gi

فِيۡمَ اَنۡتَ مِنۡ ذِكۡرٰٮهَاؕ‏ ٤٣

What concern do you have to speak about that?

Tumhara kya kaam ke us ka waqt batao

اِلٰى رَبِّكَ مُنۡتَهٰٮهَاؕ‏ ٤٤

Its knowledge rests with your Lord.

Us ka ilm to Allah par khatm hai

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

اِنَّمَاۤ اَنۡتَ مُنۡذِرُ مَنۡ يَّخۡشٰٮهَاؕ‏ ٤٥

You are only a warner to him who has a fear of it.

Tum sirf khabardar karne waley ho har us shaks ko jo uska khauff karey

— Abul Ala Maududi (Roman Urdu)

كَاَنَّهُمۡ يَوۡمَ يَرَوۡنَهَا لَمۡ يَلۡبَثُوۡۤا اِلَّا عَشِيَّةً اَوۡ ضُحٰٮهَا‏  ٤٦

On the Day they see it, they will feel as though they had stayed (in the grave) no more than one evening or one morning.

Jis roz yeh log usey dekh lengey to inhein yun mehsoos hoga ke (yeh duniya mein ya halat-e-mout mei) bas ek din ke pichle pehar ya aglay pehar tak thehrey hai
