Surah 68

068 surah

نٓ​ وَالۡقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسۡطُرُوۡنَۙ‏ ١

Nun. By the pen and what the scribes write.

Noon, Kasam hai qalam ki aur us cheez ki jisey likhne waley likh rahey hain

مَاۤ اَنۡتَ بِـنِعۡمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجۡنُوۡنٍ​ۚ‏ ٢

By your Lord's Grace, you are not afflicted with madness,

Tum apne Rubb ke fazl se majnoon (deewane) nahin ho

وَاِنَّ لَڪَ لَاَجۡرًا غَيۡرَ مَمۡنُوۡنٍ​ۚ‏ ٣

and surely yours shall be a never-ending reward,

Aur yaqeenan tumhare liye aisa ajar (reward) hai jiska silsila kabhi khatm honay wala nahin

وَاِنَّكَ لَعَلٰى خُلُقٍ عَظِيۡمٍ‏ ٤

and you are certainly on the most exalted standard of moral excellence.

Aur beshak tum akhlaaq ke bade martabe par ho

فَسَتُبۡصِرُ وَيُبۡصِرُوۡنَۙ‏ ٥

So you will soon see, and they too will see,

Anqareeb tum bhi dekh logey aur woh bhi dekh lenge

بِاَيِّٮكُمُ الۡمَفۡتُوۡنُ‏ ٦

which of you is afflicted with madness.

Ke tum mein se kaun junoon (madness) mein mubtala hai

اِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ اَعۡلَمُ بِمَنۡ ضَلَّ عَنۡ سَبِيۡلِهٖ وَهُوَ اَعۡلَمُ بِالۡمُهۡتَدِيۡنَ‏ ٧

Surely your Lord knows well those who have strayed from His Way just as He knows well those who are on the Right Way.

Tumhara Rubb un logon ko bhi khoob jaanta hai jo uski raah se bhatkey huey hain , aur wahi unko bhi acchi tarah jaanta hai jo raah-e-raast par hai

فَلَا تُطِعِ الۡمُكَذِّبِيۡنَ‏ ٨

Do not, then, yield to those who reject the Truth, decrying it as false;

Lihaza tum in jhutlane walon ke dabao mein hargiz na aao

وَدُّوۡا لَوۡ تُدۡهِنُ فَيُدۡهِنُوۡنَ‏ ٩

they would wish you to be pliant so that they too may be pliant.

yeh to chahte hain ke kuch tum mudahnat (narmi) karo to yeh bhi mudahnat (narmi) karein

وَلَا تُطِعۡ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَّهِيۡنٍۙ‏ ١٠

And do not yield to any contemptible swearer,

Hargiz na dabo kisi aisey shaks se jo bahut kasmein khane wala be-waqaat (worthless) aadmi hai

هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّآءٍۢ بِنَمِيۡمٍۙ‏ ١١

the fault-finder who goes around slandering,

Taaney deta hai , chugliyan khata phirta hai (slanderer, gossip-monger)

مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلۡخَيۡرِ مُعۡتَدٍ اَثِيۡمٍۙ‏ ١٢

the hinderer of good, the transgressor, the sinful;

Bhalayi se rokta hai , zulm-o-zyadti mein hadd se guzar janey wala hai, sakht badh-amal hai , jafa-kaar hai

عُتُلٍّ ۢ بَعۡدَ ذٰلِكَ زَنِيۡمٍۙ‏ ١٣

the coarse-grained, and above all mean and ignoble;

Aur in sab uyub (aib) ke saath badh-asl (illegitimate child) hai

اَنۡ كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَّبَنِيۡنَؕ‏ ١٤

(who so acts) simply because he has wealth and sons,

Is bina par ke woh bahut maal-o-aulad rakhta hai

اِذَا تُتۡلٰى عَلَيۡهِ اٰيٰتُنَا قَالَ اَسَاطِيۡرُ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَ‏ ١٥

and whenever Our verses are rehearsed to him, he says: “These are fairy- tales of times gone by.”

Jab hamari aayat usko sunayi jati hai to kehta hai yeh to agle waqton ke afsane hain

سَنَسِمُهٗ عَلَى الۡخُـرۡطُوۡمِ‏ ١٦

Soon shall We brand him on his snout.

Ankareeb hum iski sund (snout) par daag lagayenge

اِنَّا بَلَوۡنٰهُمۡ كَمَا بَلَوۡنَاۤ اَصۡحٰبَ الۡجَـنَّةِ​ ۚ اِذۡ اَقۡسَمُوۡا لَيَصۡرِمُنَّهَا مُصۡبِحِيۡنَۙ‏ ١٧

We have put them [i.e., the Makkans] to test even as We put to test the owners of the orchard when they vowed that they would gather the fruit of their orchard in the morning,

Humne in (ehle makkah) ko usi taraah aazmaish mein dala hai jis tarah ek baagh (garden) ke maalikon ko aazmaish mein dala tha, jab unhon ne kasam khayi ke subah sawerey zaroor apne baagh ke phal todenge

وَلَا يَسۡتَثۡنُوۡنَ‏ ١٨

without making any allowance (for the will of Allah).

Aur woh koi istasna (exception) nahin kar rahey thay

فَطَافَ عَلَيۡهَا طَآٮِٕفٌ مِّنۡ رَّبِّكَ وَهُمۡ نَآٮِٕمُوۡنَ‏ ١٩

Thereupon a calamity from your Lord passed over it while they were asleep,

Raat ko woh soye padey thay ke tumhare Rubb ki taraf se ek balaa is baagh par phir gayi

فَاَصۡبَحَتۡ كَالصَّرِيۡمِۙ‏ ٢٠

and so by morning the orchard lay as though it had been fully harvested.

Aur uska haal aisa ho gaya jaise kati hui fasal ho

فَتَـنَادَوۡا مُصۡبِحِيۡنَۙ‏ ٢١

At daybreak they called out to one another:

Subah un logon ne ek dusre ko pukara

اَنِ اغۡدُوۡا عَلٰى حَرۡثِكُمۡ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ صٰرِمِيۡنَ‏ ٢٢

“Hurry to your orchard if you would gather its fruit.”

Kaha agar phal todne hai ho to sawerey sawerey apni kheti ki taraf nikal chalo

فَانۡطَلَقُوۡا وَهُمۡ يَتَخَافَتُوۡنَۙ‏ ٢٣

So off they went, whispering to one another:

Chunanchey woh chal padey aur aapas mein chupke chupke kehte jatay thay

اَنۡ لَّا يَدۡخُلَنَّهَا الۡيَوۡمَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ مِّسۡكِيۡنٌۙ‏ ٢٤

“No destitute person shall enter it today.”

Ke aaj koi miskeen tumhare paas baag mein na aane paye

وَّغَدَوۡا عَلٰى حَرۡدٍ قٰدِرِيۡنَ‏ ٢٥

They went forth early, believing that they had the power (to gather the fruit).

Woh kuch na dene ka faisla kiye huye subah sawerey jaldi jaldi is tarah wahan gaye jaise ke woh (phal todne par) qadir hain

فَلَمَّا رَاَوۡهَا قَالُوۡۤا اِنَّا لَـضَآلُّوۡنَۙ‏ ٢٦

But as soon as they beheld the orchard, (they cried out): “We have certainly lost the way;

Magar jab baagh ko dekha to kehne lagey “hum raasta bhool gaye hain

بَلۡ نَحۡنُ مَحۡرُوۡمُوۡنَ‏ ٢٧

rather, we are utterly ruined.”

Nahin balke hum mehroom reh gaye”

قَالَ اَوۡسَطُهُمۡ اَلَمۡ اَقُلۡ لَّكُمۡ لَوۡلَا تُسَبِّحُوۡنَ‏ ٢٨

The best among them said: “Did I not say to you: why do you not give glory to (your Lord)?”

Un mein jo sab se behtar aadmi tha usne kaha “maine tumse kaha na tha ke tum tasbeeh kyun nahin karte?”

قَالُوۡا سُبۡحٰنَ رَبِّنَاۤ اِنَّا كُنَّا ظٰلِمِيۡنَ‏ ٢٩

They cried out: “Glory be to our Lord! Certainly we were sinners.”

Woh pukar utthey paak hai hamara Rubb, waqayi hum gunahgaar thay

فَاَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلٰى بَعۡضٍ يَّتَلَاوَمُوۡنَ‏ ٣٠

Then they began to reproach one another.

Phir unmein se har ek dusre ko malamat karne laga

قَالُوۡا يٰوَيۡلَنَاۤ اِنَّا كُنَّا طٰغِيۡنَ‏ ٣١

They said: “Woe to us! We had indeed transgressed.

Akhir ko unhon ne kaha “afsos hamare haal par, beshak hum sarkash ho gaye thay

عَسٰى رَبُّنَاۤ اَنۡ يُّبۡدِلَـنَا خَيۡرًا مِّنۡهَاۤ اِنَّاۤ اِلٰى رَبِّنَا رٰغِبُوۡنَ‏ ٣٢

Maybe our Lord will give us a better orchard in its place; to our Lord do we penitently turn.”

Baeed (door) nahin ke hamara Rubb humein badle mein issey behtar baagh ata farmaye, hum apne Rubb ki taraf rujoo karte hain

كَذٰلِكَ الۡعَذَابُ​ؕ وَلَعَذَابُ الۡاٰخِرَةِ اَكۡبَرُ ​ۘ لَوۡ كَانُوۡا يَعۡلَمُوۡنَ‏  ٣٣

Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the Hereafter is assuredly even greater, if only they knew.

Aisa hota hai azaab aur aakhirat ka azaab issey bhi bada hai, kaash yeh log isko jaante

اِنَّ لِلۡمُتَّقِيۡنَ عِنۡدَ رَبِّهِمۡ جَنّٰتِ النَّعِيۡمِ‏ ٣٤

Surely the God-fearing shall have Gardens of bliss with their Lord.

Yaqeenan khuda-tars logon ke liye unke Rubb ke yahan niyamat bhari jannatein hain

اَفَنَجۡعَلُ الۡمُسۡلِمِيۡنَ كَالۡمُجۡرِمِيۡنَؕ‏ ٣٥

What! Shall We treat those who have submitted (to Our command) like those who have acted as criminals?

Kya hum farma-bardaaron ka haal mujreemon sa kardein

مَا لَـكُمۡ كَيۡفَ تَحۡكُمُوۡنَ​ۚ‏ ٣٦

What is the matter with you? How ill do you judge!

Tum logon ko kya ho gaya hai, tum kaise hukum lagate ho

اَمۡ لَـكُمۡ كِتٰبٌ فِيۡهِ تَدۡرُسُوۡنَۙ‏ ٣٧

Or do you have a Book wherein you read

Kya tumhare paas koi kitaab hai jismein tum yeh padhte ho

اِنَّ لَـكُمۡ فِيۡهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُوۡنَ​ۚ‏ ٣٨

that (in the Hereafter) you shall have all that you choose for yourselves?

Ke tumhare liye zaroor wahan wahi kuch hai jo tum apne liye pasand karte ho

اَمۡ لَـكُمۡ اَيۡمَانٌ عَلَيۡنَا بَالِغَةٌ اِلٰى يَوۡمِ الۡقِيٰمَةِ​ ۙ اِنَّ لَـكُمۡ لَمَا تَحۡكُمُوۡنَ​ۚ‏ ٣٩

Or have We sworn a covenant with you which We are bound to keep till the Day of Resurrection, (a covenant requiring that whatever you ordain for yourselves shall be yours)?

Ya phir kya tumhare liye roz-e-qayamat tak humpar kuch ahad-o-paiman (covenant) sabit hai ke tumhein wahi kuch milega jiska tum hukum lagao

سَلۡهُمۡ اَيُّهُمۡ بِذٰلِكَ زَعِيۡمٌ ۛۚ‏ ٤٠

Ask them: “Which of them can guarantee that?

Inse pucho tum mein se kaun iska zaamin (gurantee/responsible) hai

اَمۡ لَهُمۡ شُرَكَآءُ ۛۚ فَلۡيَاۡتُوۡا بِشُرَكَآٮِٕهِمۡ اِنۡ كَانُوۡا صٰدِقِيۡنَ‏  ٤١

Or has something been guaranteed by any of those whom they associate with Allah in His Divinity?” If so, let them bring forth their associates, if they are truthful.

Ya phir inke thehraye huye kuch sahreek hain (jinhon ne iska zimma liya ho)?yeh baat hai to layein apne shareekon ko agar yeh sacchey hain

يَوۡمَ يُكۡشَفُ عَنۡ سَاقٍ وَّيُدۡعَوۡنَ اِلَى السُّجُوۡدِ فَلَا يَسۡتَطِيۡعُوۡنَۙ‏  ٤٢

On the Day when the dreadful calamity will unfold, when people will be summoned to prostrate themselves, and yet they will not be able to prostrate.

Jis roz sakht waqt aa padega aur logon ko sajda karne ke liye bulaya jayega to yeh log sajda na kar sakenge

خَاشِعَةً اَبۡصَارُهُمۡ تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةٌ ؕ وَقَدۡ كَانُوۡا يُدۡعَوۡنَ اِلَى السُّجُوۡدِ وَهُمۡ سٰلِمُوۡنَ‏ ٤٣

Their eyes shall be downcast and ignominy shall overwhelm them. For when they were safe and sound, they were summoned to prostrate themselves, (and they refused).

Inki nigaahein nichey hongi, zillat inpar chaa rahi hogi. Yeh jab sahi-o-saalim thay us waqt inhein sajde ke liye (bulaya jata tha) aur yeh inkar karte thay

فَذَرۡنِىۡ وَمَنۡ يُّكَذِّبُ بِهٰذَا الۡحَـدِيۡثِ​ؕ سَنَسۡتَدۡرِجُهُمۡ مِّنۡ حَيۡثُ لَا يَعۡلَمُوۡنَۙ‏ ٤٤

So leave Me, (O Prophet), to deal with him who gives the lie to this Discourse. We shall draw them little by little (to their undoing) in a way that they will not know.

Pas aey Nabi, tum is kalam ke jhutlane walon ka maamla mujhpar chodh do hum aise tarike se inko batadreej tabahi ki taraf le jayenge ke inko khabar bhi na hogi

وَاُمۡلِىۡ لَهُمۡ​ؕ اِنَّ كَيۡدِىۡ مَتِيۡنٌ‏ ٤٥

I am giving them a respite. Great is My scheme!

Main inki rassi daraaz kar raha hoon, meri chaal badi zabardast hai

اَمۡ تَسۡـَٔـلُهُمۡ اَجۡرًا فَهُمۡ مِّنۡ مَّغۡرَمٍ مُّثۡقَلُوۡنَ​ۚ‏ ٤٦

Or are you asking them for some compensation so that they feel burdened with debt?

Kya tum insey koi ajar (compensation) talab kar rahey ho ke yeh is chatti ke bojh (feel burdened with debt) taley dabey ja rahe hoon

اَمۡ عِنۡدَهُمُ الۡغَيۡبُ فَهُمۡ يَكۡتُبُوۡنَ‏ ٤٧

Or do they have any knowledge of the Unseen which they are now writing down?

Kya inke paas gaib ka ilam hai jisey yeh likh rahey hon

فَاصۡبِرۡ لِحُكۡمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُنۡ كَصَاحِبِ الۡحُوۡتِ​ۘ اِذۡ نَادٰى وَهُوَ مَكۡظُوۡمٌؕ‏ ٤٨

So bear with patience until the Judgement of your Lord comes, and do not belike the man in the fish (i.e., Jonah) who called out, choking with grief:

Pas apne Rubb ka faisla saadir honay tak sabr karo aur machli wale (younis) ki tarah na ho jao, jab usne pukara tha aur woh gham se bhara hua tha

لَوۡلَاۤ اَنۡ تَدٰرَكَهٗ نِعۡمَةٌ مِّنۡ رَّبِّهٖ لَنُبِذَ بِالۡعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ مَذۡمُوۡمٌ‏ ٤٩

had his Lord not bestowed His favour upon him, he would have been cast upon that barren shore (and would have remained there) in disgrace.

Agar uske Rubb ki meharbani uske shamil-e-haal na ho jati to woh mazmoom (disgrace) hokar chatyal maidan mein phenk diya jata

فَاجۡتَبٰهُ رَبُّهٗ فَجَعَلَهٗ مِنَ الصّٰلِحِيۡنَ‏ ٥٠

But his Lord exalted him, and included him among His righteous servants.

Aakhir-e-kaar uske Rubb ne usey barguzida (exalted) farma liya aur usey saleh bandon mein shamil kardiya

وَاِنۡ يَّكَادُ الَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا لَيُزۡلِقُوۡنَكَ بِاَبۡصَارِهِمۡ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا الذِّكۡرَ وَيَقُوۡلُوۡنَ اِنَّهٗ لَمَجۡنُوۡنٌ​ۘ‏ ٥١

When the unbelievers hear this Exhortation, they look at you as though they would knock you off your feet with their (hostile) glances. They say: “Surely he is afflicted with madness”;

Jab yeh kafir log kalam-e-nasihat (Quran) sunte hain to tumhein aisi nazaron se dekhte hain ke goya tumhare qadam ukhaad denge, Aur kehte hain ke yeh zaroor deewana hai

وَمَا هُوَ اِلَّا ذِكۡرٌ لِّلۡعٰلَمِيۡنَ‏ ٥٢

although this is nothing but an Exhortation (to goodness) for everyone in the world.

Halaanke yeh to sarey jahaan walon ke liye ek naseehat hai
